Military Trailers for the G
I've decided to buy a military trailer for the G as well as for use with our VW Syncro camper later on. We often go 'wild camping' (last time the Eifel Mountains in Germany) and a trailer to carry camping/cooking kit would be great.
Having looked round the civilian options (Brenderup, Thule etc) we decided they weren't up to much and didn't suit the look we were going for.
I wondered if there was a standard military issue trailer used with the G in service?
So far I have seen the Sankey models commonly used with Land Rovers as well as these:
M101/416 style USMC/Canadian Trailer
Anyone got any pictures/pointers/recommendations?

Now that is a trailer!
BTW He is a super guy, very knowlegable and always offer assistance.
Russ280 on this forum had a Sankey for sale a while back. I think he also has the NATO hook up that all of the above require.
I have one, but I must say the best purchase I have made from Chris is my Oztent RV1.
I kitted myself for my trip from here to Cape Town 100% from Chris. He might not be the cheapest, but all his stuff is the best quality.
Also check out his battery charger.
This looks like the proper G trailer. http://www.histotrade.de/deu_2_2164_Gelndeanhnger_HMK_05T.htm
For a civilian trailer, I think Ifor's are up to the job
The ifor Looks the business.
A friend of mine is making an expedition trailer for his 110, he purchased the rear end of of a 130 utility vehicle for the job, he's half way through the build and so far it looks awesome.
I think he's just about purchased everything he needs and its come in at a smidge over £1500.00 a bargain if you price up the alternatives.
Mark, that looks purposeful (the BW one).
Bit pricey but it looks well built. Might have to save up.
They don't come up for sale very often, when they do their snapped up. Always 1400 Eu upwards.
I’ve sold the Sankey. They truly are built like the proverbial brick outhouse. I was told that the MOD pays £6k each
I can imagine that could be correct. Even though they are quite heavy the rolling resistance is low due to large dia. Wheels.
I was going to remove the tub and replace it with plastic boxes from these people:

Extremely tuff, you will see them under HGV trailer units.
And then maybe put a roof tent on top (I hate roof racks/weight on the roof with a vengeance)
LR took an Ifor Williams trailer round the world when they launched the Discovery II.
BTW.
I have a G Wagen tow hitch converted to a NATO hitch if you’re interested.
hi G-Funk and others,
Can confirm that trailering is great if you don't want your car (especially your roof) full of stuff. I have tried the following variants:
Sankey trailer: tows OK and otherwise great because they are VERY tough and cheap to buy. They also pack quite well, are the same width as your car so no extra mirrors are necessary. The only shortfall is that they are relatively heavy to start with and - because of the military spec/nature - not easily convertable to anything else.....so mark II idea.....
converted LR 130 tipper loadbed on an Ifor Williams 2.4T axle with nato hitch: tows better than expected, as well as a sankey. Very light weight to begin with as the 130 loadbed is aluminium. Also very high loading not a problem because you can keep your back straight at all times. The bigger loadbed is much easier to use than the sankey's. Problem: wanted to fit roof tent and did but found that Centre of Gravity was FAR too high and the whole thing felt completely unsafe. Also, because of the size (same length as a Sankey), it was very tippy which made the roof tent idea unworkable......mark III....
converted Ifor Williams trailer, single axle: much lower centre of gravity and tows fantastically well - much better than ANY military trailer ever will. Admitedly, it is not as heavy duty, but it is very well made and does EVERYTHING that I (maybe not your average squaddy) can through at it. Given these three options that I've trailed over the last 5 years, I would wholly recommend the converting the IW base unit as it tows better than anything else and one can put a roof tent on it and it still tows like a dream. However, this is by far the most expensive option.
If you're just after a tough trailer to chuck stuff into for an extended road trip (both on and off road), I'd say you simply can't beat the value for money that buying an ex-mod sankey offers. Especially if you just want to try it out, I'd recommend you do this first. You won't lose on devaluation and you'll get a much better idea of what you actually want (if this isn't perfect for you already).
Good luck/ph
Thanks for that link - NOT!
Looks like a good option but way too expensive for my purposes.
Unfortunately that site is great.
Now I want a Maggiolina Extreme roof tent!
