Exhaust notes, anyone?
I love the smoothness of the straight-six. I love the relatively decent mileage that I seem to be getting... I love that my car's butthole is on its side... but I don't love the whack looking and weak sounding original butthole Mercedes birthed it with. :D
I have searched the forums for some tips but still a bit lost... Does anyone have any recommendations for a good, somewhat mean and throaty sounding can for a 463-300 (petrol)-LWB? It will need to stick out/under the OEM running boards/side steps. A dual-tipped starfish, I mean exhaust, would be better than one with a single tip. I'll admit it... I do like a bit of flash every now and then.
Before anyone starts going into whether or not the G should be an offroad or street machine type-of-discussion, please take note that I'm looking to buy a proper SWB for that part of my life - I've just chosen to keep my LWB looking mean and street (without getting too bling bling, of course).
Help!
detete the final exhaust box so that you are using the catalyst and the small central exhaust only for noise suppresion. I had mine made up in s/s, works well, a bit noisier but not excessive.
I believe so. Mine has been running without it for over 3 years without misshap.
When my exhaust needed replacing i went to a company called Top Gear in St.Albans, they have many branches nationwide http://www.topgear.co.uk/contact/
they made me a stainless steel straight thru system, it comes out at the side and you can choose the end pipe style. Best of all it sounds like thunder nad it improved the performance.
the 280 has a different route and no cat but the principle is the same
I used top gear in st Albans, made my 280 sound like a v8, then I bought a v8, and that sounded like, well, like nothing else on earth, Can anyone hear that pineing !
if I was doing it again I would exit the exhaust after the cat, in effect only using the cat as the silencer, deleting the centre box as well, if you did that you'd be junking almost every thing and could have a side exit beside the drivers side rear wheel arch. I would also cost next to nothing as nothing needs to be made up just a short perhaps foot long exit pipe.
why do racing cars have straight pipe exhausts? I think that you have little to lose by trying this as it will cost so little, mate it to a k&n filter and tweek your mixture (you will probably need to increse fueling as the engine breathing is much improved) and you should see a marked improvement in performance.

Very very interesting... is that final exhaust box really simply there in function as a noise killer?
