If you have any photos which could be posted here I for one would be interested.
Isn't that supercharged V8 the most amazing piece of mechanical design ever. To get all that stuff under the bonnet is incredible.
Roly,
On that same topic, ie bonnet stuffing, how come MB were apparently unable to fit 6cyl 320CDI into "G" , they had managed to fit 6cyls before, surly extra 200cc is not that significent and anyway would have thought modern engines generally getting more compact for any given capacity?
Marcus
I've only ever heard stories ,so I'm not sure. But I believe that it was too long by only a few inches to go into the G and more importantly the M (for merc not us). Apparently the design team on engines and vehicles were not talking during the design of the vehicles.
You are correct in that the 320 cdi would be superb in the G.
The CDI engines all seem huge for their respective cc's. In actual size & weight. I think the 270cdi engine is a little bit heavier then the V8 (500), and a fair bit heavier then the old 300TD engine.. The 400cdi engine is better off in a trailor
Thanks Roly & Mark,
Yes I had always thought the 320CDI would have been about perfect for the "G", could we not persuade Bill Moss or someone to attempt it.
Re your comments Mark, about bulk and weight of CDI series engines, I can only surmise that MB intended from the outset to provide for continuing/substantial increases in HP & torque and therefore left plenty metal around the cylinders including room for generous coolant passages and oilways to ensure durability. Also aids noise suppression ?
Marcus
To be fair, the extra weight does include the turbo and all the other gizmo's the CDI's needs to operate.. And as far as noise is cocerned, the CDI's need all the help they can get.
Guys,
What's the problem in driving slow? If I want to drive fast I can well use my other Mercedes estate, so what's the point in asking ourselves, "what if we could fit the 320 CDI engine in the G?"
The G was never designed to go fast on the road, and even the 72 bhp 240 GD is extremely capable off-road, so what is the point of having more ooomph?
As we say in my village up in the mountains in Spain
"If" my grandma had nuts she'd be my grandad"
Cheers,
I'll take that grey cabrio, thank you very much.
Do you have any more pics? Especially of the cabrio?
i`m also a fan of the cabrio and would appreciate a couple more pics
just a couple of shots of various gs. the black one is a g55k what a beast
