My G has less than 70.000km
but there is a dry knocking sound coming from the steering column on higher speeds on bumps. (souns like toktoktok...) It's not a loud sound...there is no play....it sounds like it is coming from close to the steering wheel? We already changed the steering wheel bearing, but that wasn't it?
Does anybody have an idea? Something typical in an early 463?
thank you,
G

Have you held the steering column under the bonnet? Try twisting it by hand, under the U-joint, you might find some play there, sounds similar to something described on P3 not long ago, but that did have play:

Re: steering column/ knocking sound

check the fr bearings for play..[lift the front wheel, hold from top and bottom of the wheel and slowly shake for play.]

also, the track rod ends could be worn,as could be the front bushes...

good luck.

ps, is the steering wheel on tight  ?

I'm still no closer to solving this.

Need to check upper column next I think - not sure how easy to remove?

Anybody?

Re: steering column/ knocking sound

Hi everybody,
I hope someone can shed some light on this?
Yesterday the car went on the bridge in the garage...
There is no play whatsoever....
following items have been checked and are in perfect condition:
-wheel bearings
-steering damper
-steering housing
-both u-joints
-steering wheel bearing

still there is a (subtle and not frequent) knocking sound coming from inside the steering wheel/dash
I can feel the knock slightly on the steering wheel...but the wheel doesn't move. Now I am starting to think that something attached to the steering column is loose? Like indicators, lock or something....
...what about that speedo cable? how to check?

Re: steering column/ knocking sound

indications that the speedo cable is dry or kinked are that the pointer is unsteady at low speed and trembling at higher speeds...remedy is to remove the instrument console which involves removing the steering wheel (pop the badge out of the centre) then using a 27mm socket and breaker bar undo the centre nut at the base of the steering wheel..(nut and two washers)..then with two wide blade screwdrivers insert into the sides of the console between the cluster and the shroud and prise the cluster towards you....reach behind and unscrew the speedo cable from the speedo head...then crawl underneath and unscrew the other end of the cable from the drive unit on the transfer case....with a pair of molegrips hold the outer sheath and spin the cable with the mole grips...any notchiness indicates a dry cable..it is possible to draw the inner drive from the outer sheath.wash in Petrol and clean until smooth...from the speedo end run very light oil in and follow it with the inner drive .. like a ramrod...repeat until all the dead / congealed lubricant is removed...wipe the inner drive clean an lightly smear with a graphite lubricant...insert inner into outer check turning freely with molegrips and replace all as found..

Has anyone removed the upper steering column?

Is it straight forward? Anything to look out for?

cheers Andy

My speedo is steady as a rock
I am going to take the whole steering column out to check it...
