TICKING HEATER FAN
Hi, can anyone help with this...........
The heater blower makes a loud ticking noise.
I took off the rubber lipping on the intake box.
I took out the top plate underneath it.
I can see the motor (with difficulty due to the re-circ/close flap). I removed a few leaves and a little mud from the bottom well, but the fan impellor cage looks clear (NB I can only see/feel the first 5mm depth of it).
The ticking is at rpm frquency i'd say (one knock per rev) and sounds fairly solid/mechanical.
The main issue is further access.
(1)It looks like I could remove the gas-strut and hinge the bonnet right back. Is this right?
(2)How do I remove the recirc/close flap?
(3)If I do all this, is fan removal straightforward through the intake box?
(4)Is there a known issue/problem concerning this?
Many, many thanks
Eljay
I can only answer the easy question regarding the bonett strut- Yes Take it off and push the bonett all the way 'till it rests on the roof
Eljay prepare yourself for a 8 hour job...
You will have to take the dash out
Hi Eljay like LEEU says the dash has to be removed to access the Heater module if you have to get at the blower motor / rotating drum..unlike the 460 series with a fan the 463s have a revolving cylinder which can be fouled by any object that gets between it and the housing..I suspect that the air intake box drain is blocked and a hard leaf stalk or similar has been sucked into the cylinder cavity when water collected in the intake box... run the blower at High speed for a few minuts and see if the clicking sound lessens..... if so unblock the drain which is located in the left bottom corner (as you look at the air intake box from the front of the vehicle) it has a rubber outlet nozzle underneath which is designed to stop water entering if you go fording in deep water....if there is any squealing at any speed the chances are the damage has been done by ingress of water and the bearings have collapsed that carry the rotating cylinder.....dash removal is then the only answer.and sooner than later because the rotating cylinder will eventually foul the housing and stop revolving.....the motor will burn out as a result....
Hi eljay the problem is at the bottom of the air intake box.get an inspection mirror.(small mirror on a stick) that will allow you to look in the mirror as you shine a torch into the box...if you shine the torch on the mirror you will see the grot that has collected under the blowers revolving drum..geting the grot out is more of a challenge ...a length of wire from a coathanger might help....possibly the only solution is to remove the heater/blower module which means removing the lower part of the dash/centre console...*** note to remove the centre console there are three screws ..two you can see in front of the ashtray and one at the rear only accessable when you remove the Hi-Lo range lever gaiter and apply a short stsrhead screwdriver to a screw in the centre of the forward flange.....the gear lever surround lifts out as does the ash tray and all the switches press out except the lighter and ashtray light which inclips underneath...you can now access the bolts holding the centre dash ....
Hi eljay I have never removed the recirc 'flap when lifting leaves and debris from the bottom of the intake box..can even get a vacuum cleaner nozzle to reach the bottom....there is a 92 G' in the workshop I will take a look at about 19.30hrs and revert .....
Hi eljay removing the recirc' flap may widen thr throat of the duct but offers no advantage to cleaning the blower aperture which is at the bottom.....

Sounds like I would need the recirc/close-flap off to see anything more in the intake box.
How do I remove it
Thanks
