sticking in gear
Hi All , need advise please , 1988 G280 5 sp manual , sometimes unable to change down from 5th gear unless you stop switch off , put in reverse then changes ok , but seems ok if you drive through gears up to 4th then change down . Clutch not slipping , synchros alll good , could it be rod adjustment , clutch master cylinder or do they have slave cylinder , cheers stevo
Hi worn rubber bushes (available from MB very inexpensive) but expensive labour to change and adjust the arms to suit the new alignment...(over GBP 350 if MB do it) is often the cause as the geometry changes and control arms go "over centre" other more sinister causes within the gearbox can be caused by wrong oil ...it should be ATF... yes!! even in the manual G box. or not enough oil.....
i have a question about the gear box in my 300GD its a 5 speed manual if you switch from 1st to reverse it jams the gears and i have to jump out the truck climb under the truck and pull at the 2 gray rods that come out of the gear box to free it off but if i switch from first into second then into reverse it works fine dose anyone have any suggestions
The 5 speed Getrag on the 460 300GD jammed in gear from new .. call it a feature if driven with less than a delicate hand at any point.
It tends to jam you in 3rd .. yet lock you into the 5th/Rev gate. Answer is to whack gear lever sideways away from you (RHD) and it pops out. Alternative is to go under and manually pull back 3rd to neutral. After a while if you are brutal.. you need to put the stick in neutral and pull it over towards you as 1/2nd gates gets too much of a stretch :shock:
This was learnt on new car .. and mine has this delightful feature.. just be nice to it and it happens rarely :?
ok thankyou seems simple enough
The above procedure of knocking sideways .. so be used as last resort after you have;
replaced the rubber bushes in both ends of the rods
rebuilt the gearchange mechanism
locked the gearchange mechanism with a 3mm or similar drill and then adjusted all the rods so that the levers are in the mid position without tension.
.. I did above .. still not great gearchange (they never were) and my 5th/rev lever from gearbox has a fair wear on it.. both it and 3/4th leak oil not so gently..

Hi , many thanks for info , really appreciated ! will go down that route first , regards stevo
