Completly blocked in insuring a LHD veh here unless I can provide a direct equivalent model that was offically imported to UK, I am presuming that this would need to in writing from MBUK or possibily photcopies of brochures , where is best place to start, any useful contacts.

Only G-Wagens officially imported into the UK:

W460: 230 GE (SWB only), 300 GD (Cabrio, SWB, LWB), 280 GE (SWB and LWB), from 1981 to 1990. All others never imported.

W463: 300 GD (SWB and LWB) and 300 GE (SWB and LWB), from 1991 to 1996. All others never imported.

W461 never officially imported by Mercedes but Automotive Technik imported the Puch G290 GDT between 1999 and 2001, I believe.

Cheers,

Jesus,
With respect to the W463 Series, does the 300GD model designation include the 177HP engine as well as the 113HP ?
Heres hoping,

No, unfortunately.

When the 350 GDT/G350 DT was introduced in 1992, it was only in LHD (no room for the turbo apparently) and MBUK decided to stick to the 300 GD.

They faced the same problem with the G300 Turbodiesel regarding the lack of space for the RHD version and in any case by the time was introduced in 1996 MBUK did only send a handful of Gs in the UK (6 in total if I am not mistaken -all G300 petrol) so they did not even try with this one either.

But I still don't understand the position taken by the insurance companies in that part of the world....... over here if it's road legal and UK registered many companies would insure it.

Can you not teke the insurance over here even if you live in NI?

Thanks Jesus,
So basically never was a turbo diesel in RHD for UK market, though may be able to fudge issue of 300GD vis a vis G300TD.
Re insurance postcode is hard to get round, I have had too many instances of insurance companies who advertise in NI edition of Yellow Pages who when by phone or internet and only when postcode requested & given ( always one of the last details asked for ) do they brightly say " Oh we dont provide cover for NI " .
If I am stuck with 300GD @113 hp, what are they like for performance/economy bearing in mind that we would have preferred an Automatic version.
We could always buy the one that Caversham has 1992, leather, A/C etc, only £17,950 but then our 460 must be worth at least £7,000 as a trade in !!!

I've been wanting to get a G300TD as well and at one point approached Caversham about trade-in value on my 92 300GDS 463 with the mbtex interior, sunroof and in a desirable colour. I expected something decent since there were selling what I thought was an inferior 300GDL at about £14,500. I was offered less than £7,000.

I am in the Mercedes Benz Owners' club, they recommend Peter Best insurance to the members (01376 573 033) He gives fairly good policies for Mercs of all ages and types. I use him for my G. I know that there are many club members in NI. Maybe he can help you with a LHD G not officially imported to UK.

Thanks Maxwell & Roly,
I didnt really think the old girl was worth £7,000, but like yourself was estimating a trade in value based on Caversham's selling prices, however the relationship seems to be difficult to establish.
And yes Roly I will give Peter Best a ring re insurance, thouge the Mrs. seems to have went off the notion since the reviewed price of Owalstons wagon put it out of the running, & that after twenty years of telling me she had no interest in motors !

There is another thread somewhere talking about insurance and NI. Perhaps send Tom Baldwin and private message.

What was the deal with Owalston's G and what has become of it?

Maxwell,
Most probably me that started that other thread re insurance,
& " the deal " was / is that Owalston was offered £32,00 by a VW garage, reckoning by a comment previously on this topic they would do more than OK on trade-in even if they send it back to Germany.
I cant figure where Owalston got his valuation of £25,000 in the first place ,but I wasnt going to argue, being resonably sure that in the circumstances the vehicle was "kosher" otherwise, I was looking to stay on the right side of £20,000 for any prospective purchase.
PS.
The Mrs has now decided that she would rather have a garden room for her birthday --- since I was going to spend £25,000 anyway, Hmmmm.
