I have heard a few people say their cars will drive up hills of more than 45'.

I took on a hill of about that yesterday, and although my 463 GDS is in top condition, and running like a steam train, it can not drive up a long hill like that, it just does not have enough power.

What is more is that sideways the car started tipping over and was only held up by opening the high side door and getting a guy hanging on the open door.

I have done a lot in G's, but this has been the worst I have ever done in any car, and wouldn't do it again. The hill is this steep for about 400m before it starts to level of, meaning it would be a bit of a washing machine if you had to go down there, and I am not convinced the cab would be able to withstand that, it sure felt that way when I was up there, and I couldn't get my seat belt on.

So I would like to invite anybody who says his G can drive up a slope that steep to come and show me, I would even pay your fuel.

Re: Steep slopes

Did you lack grip or power?
In other words, did your wheels spin, or did you engine die?
My 300GD (113hp) schould be able to maintain a 80% slope
that is 80% of 45° = only 36° (according to MB data)
When you have momentum on your side you can do much much better, but on a 400m long slope you rely on power and gearing.

Re: Steep slopes

I had enough traction, it was just the juice that was lacking.

80% of 45° = only 36° would make more sense, although with a bit of momentum and shorter slopes I have done lots worst, Bill can testify for that.

Yes Grecian, I am taking 2 years off work. That is how I can afford to be out playing in the middle of the week.

Re: Steep slopes

Huss I didn't even think about breathing, never mind getting it on camera!

It could be quite a weekend, but everybody will come out at own risk. Remember it is just a farm, although it is 7 000 acres, so there are no recovery vehicles, if you drive into something, you have to drive out...

There is also the Bala off-road centre not to far from me. I've never been, but I understand it is quite wet and good.

Anyone interested PM me and we can try to arrange something.

As long as I don't have to do that hill again!

Re: Steep slopes

I am only driving an oil burner because that is what I am burning in it, good old cooking oil. If it wasn't for that I would only drive petrol cars.

If anything can get up the said hill, it will have at least 8 cylinders and high octane in its veins...

Sorry to disappoint you Huss (and the photo’s don’t do the slope justice) but a good old Range Rover, autobox made it up there multiple times. It’s without a doubt greater than 45 degrees

Re: Steep slopes

Yes Russ, but it is only a short slope, you could get a run-up and tackle it with momentum, even if it is only to get your revs up.

Agreed. I’m guessing it’s maybe 150ft rather than 400 :) But it’s certainly steep. Impossible to walk up unless you’re on all fours, not for the faint hearted, or is that not for people with more than 2 brain cells??

I usually poo poo the power/momentum advice but in this case that’s all that’s going to get you up. Just enough to get some wheel spin, and an autobox helps IMHO.

Lets put it this way I’m not going to bother attempting it in my 300GDL but my point was Jeeps don’t have anything special in this department (far from it!!)

Re: Steep slopes

If a std Range Rover got up I'd like to point my 460 at it......At my local P&P they've dummed down the slopes as only my G could get up them.......just lit the blue touch paper! I wouldn't expect my 463 to climb any thing like as well as the 460...oops done it again!
I fancy a Wales trip what about that big valley Bara?? Prefer South Wales as I'd bring the 460. Looking at the pic again the top bit is very steep, any chace of a photo/vid of attemps?

HOLY CRAP! THAT STEEP AND 400 METERS LONG?????

OK as a novice to off roading 'Hard Core' and looking at the slope in the picture .... I will say 'GULP' and I will not lie - my blood did run very cold....... the 'doubt gremlin' has raised its head....

BUT

I am up for at least turning up, taking a look then chickening out! Any perspective dates yet? (can't do the 29th Nov or the 12th of Dec - Big Airsoft days!)

Re: Steep slopes

Huss it seems like the boys are to scared to come out to play.

So far it is Russ, Spider, me, new 90, Disco 3 a series 2A and possible a Amazon. I fear the G's are going to be the minority again.

I am planning the trip with an outfitter to be about 6/7 hours through the North Wales mountains and forests and only for serious 4x4's, so sorry no 55's.

Ah you didn’t tell me that there was going to people in proper 4x4’s who will show me up

Seriously my brother has one and they are superb as an all rounder, not quite the ultimate off road :)

Re: Steep slopes

I would rate an auto Disco very similar to my manual 463 diesel, but then again I have never been impressed with this car off road.

I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Re: Steep slopes

I would be really really tempted LEEU
But darny risk bending the wifes motor much less writing it off.
It being being our only automatic & near-enough unique, so practically irreplacable
the other two are complete slugs, i do know that down at Todds leap there was a bit that beat me in the wee red diesel 460 simply because I did not have sufficient oomph/horsepower.
AND I was in the low box.
an I dont really tink it would be fair to the Galaxy to try her

Re: Steep slopes

Side slopes can be a problem as I have personally experienced - see my picture just posted.

A steady gradient is easier to deal with than a bumpy one and sudden changes in surface are likely to cause momentum changes on side slopes that can result in a roll. If anything does happen, just hold tight and keep arms inside the vehicle - at low speeds you should be OK.

My own G has raised suspension and larger and more agressive tyres than standard (but still road legal) and goes up and down slopes much steeper than 45 deg (1 in 1) if they are straight up and down.

See Splatt on YouTube for examples.

My Range Rover was declared a write-off by the insurance company after the 360 roll-over and resulted in me getting Splatt.

I regularly compete in trials across the south of England with the All Wheel Drive Club and spectators are welcome to come and see what we get up to.

Re: Steep slopes

Well I had a 230 "high compression" with a lot more power than a 280 and now I've got a 6 cyl 300 diesel and neither of these cars can go up a long 1 in 1 slope. I'm not talking 50 m, then your momentum will help, try pulling away on such a slope and if you can, I would like to see it.
