What do you dislike most about your g-wagen
this of course depends upon what you vehicle you have, so my dislikes are specific to the 463 3 litre petrol
1. I don't like the light grey cloth interior ...it shows the dirt to easily, plus I preferred the seating format of the 460
2. could do without the electric sunroof and even the electric windows
3. the gearbox is a bit notchy (I have a manual)
4. I have had trouble with the drivers seat, twisting..welds breaking
5. at 19/20mpg its thirsty
All things considered not much really, getting the seats recovered would solve the main gripe and when the electric windows fail they will go manual. Anyone else got pet hates? :idea:
I think the doors on 463s (at least the early ones) require great skill to close.
I would like more power & an extra gear...(93 300 GDL auto)
For a truck with less than 70k km mine has a lot of squeeks & rattles.
Even a brandnew 09 G has squeeks & rattles...
Other people (usually kid’s) who seem incapable of:
A. actually opening the doors, its as if they have never seen/used a push button latch.
B. Managing to close the door properly. So you have to put up with it rattling on the first latch because they won’t/can’t open and close it whilst you’re in motion.
C. Some then can’t even get out if it’s dark??!! :roll: :roll:
D. That stupid sun roof. Pretty useless and just leaks :evil:
On the subject of rattles / squeaks etc. Mine has done 220k miles / 354k km’s and it’s remarkable devoid of just about any. One minor one from around the instrument panel which I need to track down. Other than that zilch :)
hahahhaha! I think A., B., and C are extremely common if the person didn't have access to a G/defender!
It drinks too much petrol....

because of the air tightness of the G, slighty open a window and the door will shut much easier
The smug sense of well being and one up man ship it give the owner 8) :wink: . Until I owned a G I was really quite nice!

there was a green 460 300ge on the m25 today that was quite well !!
I vaguely remember that the 460 300GD taken more than a minute to do 0-62. The engine sounded awesome tho!
That i don't get to drive it cause i already have a car and a van and can't afford to tax and insure them all. And also that my girlfriend keeps giving out about it and keeps telling me to sell it.

I don't like the fact it pulls 3500rpm at 70mph in top. Not exactly leisurely cruising, a 5th gear would be nice.
I don't like the fact that I only have 163bhp to shift nearly two and a half tons and can not get more than 16mpg, ever.
I don't like the bottom right hand edge of the lower dashboard that digs into the side of my leg, especialy when off road.
I don't like the fact that nobody can shut the doors properly ( but then nobody in my house seems to be able to turn off a light switch either).
I don't like the fact that the fuse box is situated directly under the leaky wiper spindle causing 'amusing' electrical problems.
I don't like the fact that not enough people know what it is therefore can not appreciate why it is probably the best all round 4x4 available.
That it gets more attention then me!!!!! :lol:

my main gripe is it sits there nagging me to spend some money getting all its little area's of rust repaired properly , which i know i should but i'll proberably end up bodgeing it my self ,and regreting it ,thankfully i've not had time yet .

The manual window winder on the driver door jams into my right leg.
I only get 15mpg tops (230GE)
My daughter wants to sit in the back/boot the whole time.
The passenger seat squeaks when you tip it forward (SWB)
The spindles leak - no matter what angle you park it.
The blower is superb, until it stops
3rd gear is notchy
Travellers keep stopping and asking me to sell it to them for £300 !
Mercedes dealerships have no idea how to service them.
The things I don't like...
- The fact that people always refer to it as the Land Rover I own...
- The chequered pattern on the headlining.
- That the leather seats are squeaky going over bumps if no one is in them... but that's common to many cars.
- That my rear load door needs to be pushed quite hard to shut.. and no it's not the seals, although it is marginally easier if another door is open.
- That there is no cup holders for long drives.
- That I don't drive it often enough.
- That it is hard to get someone to work on it and who actually knows what they're doing.
- The fact that it preoccupies so much of my time which would be better spent doing other things.
- The fact that I met Spider because of it.
- That I had to rig an audio input for my mp3 player.
So all pretty petty complaints really other than the second last one which is a major bother...
Oh and if I had a RHD I'd have quite a few more complaints.... but fortunately mine is built the way it was intended to be! :twisted:

The short time I have my current 280GE, is people calling it a Fiat Campagnolo or Iveco Massif, since its a rust bucket right now, but still the best by far ......

The thing I hate most is that I never feel quite "safe" enough in it. Seeing all those smart cars whizzing by... gives me the chills. The damage they could do to me if we were involved in an accident!! Oh, the horror!

Although I have never met him, he told me a proper roll is at 150m long. Well yesterday balancing on 2/3 wheels on a 45'+ slope of more than 400m with a guy hanging on to the open door to keep al least 3 wheels on the ground those words was all I was thinking of.
2 hours later and a change of underwear we were on solid ground, still wondering if Mr Perfect would have seen that as a roll.
2: You think you are invinceble because they just go where you want them to, so if you then get in trouble, nobody can help you.
3: A bit more power, my car could not drive up this hill in 1st low range, how other people manage to drive up steeper slopes I don't know.
4: Both my favourite G's tend to always get a piece of cow s*#t right into the driver side door handle.
I can put up with the squeeks and rattles but the road/wind noise is annoying so motorway journeys are pretty much out of the question which means I need to have something other than a G as well. The something other is obviously cheaper to run and therefore I feel I ought to use it instead of the G all of the time....but I don't, so then I feel guilty for frittering away my hypothetical childrens inheritance. So really I ought to sell it as I don't use it for what it's intended. But I must have a G. So what I dislike about it most is the quandry it puts me in on a daily basis. That and the fact that there's not enough space in the radio slot so I can't get my head unit to fit properly. That gets right on my t%ts!
What a load of old whingers. How lucky you all are (except for those without a G, and without a 500) to have the finest 4 wheeled contraption known to womankind. Knew about the petrol consumption, and didn't care, doesn't have a sunroof so that can't leak, and the passenger door window would probably be alright if I hadn't managed to stuff a car park ticket down it. The tight door seals keep the weather out, which is really useful here in Shropshire and I don't go out much in the dark (see y'all in Spring guys) so the lights are OK too.
Oh, but mine is so nice, I'm unhappy to use it as nature intended, so obviously need another one to play with - so my moan is - I've only got one G.

The G500 is far quicker than the G320. The 500GE (236 CV) isn't. I'll pass on the rest of your argument, though :lol:

Actually for motorway driving the G500 is less thirstier than the G320... more cyclinders working less hard... of course it's a different story around town.
463 Dislikes..............................................................er.............Can't bring my self to off road it.........don't want to get mud on all that Leather and Walnut.
460 none I love even the rust.....it means parts are easy to find!

For all its faults the worst thing I really don't like is the fuel consumption. Out of all the MB V8 5Ltrs I have owned this is the worst MPG I have ever had. Period. Even against the ML55'! (Which I thought bad enough) the G still beats it hands down.
This is tempered ever so slightly with the effortless power you do get with a V8, yes the 6's are smooth, but so are the V8's, but you get the added 'beat' of an engine heart, which is something I look for in a car. You also get the 'roar' when you have a V8, which again is something that one likes.
however you also get a very bad 'sway' with the G once you get past 125/130MPH and the time it take to get there, well lets not talk about that! (and lets not talk about looking at the fuel consumption at that speed - but single figures do feature heavily! :? )
All in all, I have really enjoyed reading this threat and hats off for thinking of it, but it does have one common undertone, no matter what the gripe it, no matter how much it niggles - we still love the G! Yes it rattles, yes we have a door closing problem, yes it drink fuel.
BUT
When all is said and done and ONE had one's choice, and one choice only it would be difficult to chose another car unless your personal circumstances dictated so? One reason I chose the 500 is I am giving my Kids the chance to experience a V8 before the governments. petrol companies and the EcoFundies get there way!
And yes - if I could afford it I would have an AMG G, despite the rattles, doors, squeaky seats, wind noise, consumption etc etc.

to try and summarise, very few if any mechanical complaints, (ignoring the window wipers) rust an issue with the 460 but largely resolved with the 463, fuel consumption a problem for all, but given the immense weight of the g-wagen in all its incarnations hardly surprising. Not exactly a JD Power survey but not bad overall. If I read these posts never having had any g-wagen experience I would be impressed. :D
Would 'too expensive' be classified as a complain as well? But I guess for all of us, we just buy what we truly like...

I also think that the ride on the short wheel base is bouncey. I have only driven a lwb once but that did seem smoother.
