Is it me or is there a huge element of snobbery when it comes to G-Wagens.

By this I mean, when someone posts a comment about modifing their G to something other than standard (colours, trim, chrome etc). people seem to instantly jump on them saying bad taste!

Why?

Surley anything that is done to prolong the life of the scene is a good thing?

I have also noticed that anyone who sells a G-Wagen on ebay is instantly ridiculed on here.

I find it bizarre

Re: G Wagen Snobbery

In my mind a G is a G whether its modified or not - The only time I become a real snob is when I am up against a LR or RR and the owner is trying to pontificate that its the best 4x4 etc etc.

I know I can sometimes come across as being slightly biased, however most of the members I post up against I have met on a number of occasions or spoken with and they understand my sense of humour. Like the vehicles we drive and love, you tend to find the owners have a similar sense of humor and attitude to life. If they appear snobbish I don't think it is meant wholeheartedly. (well unless you talk about the ART G - which I really, really don't like).

Now, once you have painted your G wagen, for goodness sake get rid of the engine and drop in a 5ltr V8, and maybe I will talk to you again!

Spider1V - love to you all!

Not sure its snobbery as much as "why the hell use a G for the road?!?" I dont get it. Have your G as you want, after all it is yours.

Joe is right
and there is some outspoken members on here (maybe myself included)
but most of these comments should be taken lighty or return fire with
heavy artillery (vocal of course)
ref the adverts on fleabay and auto trader its the way the advert is worded about special this and special that
its all down to your personal taste

I DONT LIKE MODIFED G,S 9but a little chrome is nice (sometimes)

keep your chin up and keep posting

Yes the problem for new comers is that most of the people on here know each other (or at least feel like they know each other!) and many of the comments which come across as snobbery or sarcastic are really very tongue in cheek!

So my advice is take everything with a pinch of salt and if someone gives you a hard time then dish it back... respectfully of course!

The beauty of the G is it's everything to everybody so enjoy! And keep posting!

Re: G Wagen Snobbery

scenario for you (hypohetical of course)

I buy a G Wagen, take a disc cutter, cut the arse end off it, give it a 4" lift and fit tractor tyres, the whole world says "nice one - thats awesome"

or

I buy a G wagen, Paint it a "better colour" fit 20" wheels - the whole world says "hmm not to my taste"

????

definition "the Whole World" = GWOA

Re: G Wagen Snobbery

ok I guess I deserve some of this and if I cause offence its not meant really just my sense of humour. Definitely not snobbery just gentle mockery. But I would argue that a g-wagen, basically a box on wheels does not lend itself to embellishment.

Just to add my view, I cannot see the point of putting "22 wheels on a G, or any other credible 4wd for that matter. To my mind it is comparable with putting BFG M/Ts on a 911, what's the point?

I guess doing pleases some people though.

you might think it is but is not really, whats the point in having a big wallowy "high profile" 4x4 tyres if you never going to take it off road?
not only does it look much better but it drives much better on those wheels, and tows a trailer far better too! an yes thats why I have a 4x4 as opposed to a car, i reguarly tow 3.5ton with it!
I do get your point though, i personally dont think any G's other than the newer "bling" ones look right on big rims, like if you put those 22's on an older landcruiser they just dont look right Imo.

I just find the fat tyres give a better ride. The G is designed to have 16 or perhaps 18" rims. Putting bigger ones on seems likely to turn it into a bone shaker. I recall a guy called Paul selling a G55K on here. He had owned lots of Gs but said that whilst it was a great car the ride was awful. I put that down to hard suspension and big rims.

I have never driven a LC Amazon, but don't you find that the 22" give a much harder ride?

Re: G Wagen Snobbery

Yep I admit it I’m a G Wagen snob

In fact a car snob full stop, I constantly make judgements on people based on their wheels

Of course it helps when you simply know you have better taste than the ones you are judging

In fact I’ve started a new sport. There’s a couple of BMW X6’s around here (one particularly obnoxious white one with maybe 22 inch chrome / 40 profile wheels on) You just point and laugh out loud as they drive past. You have to note that most people around here are still doing that when they see a plane flying past, minus the laughing of course (it’s a mix of fear and complete bafflement)

On a serious note Dan is quite correct. The G is 30 years old. You can stuff as much traction/stability control electronics in there as you like. It’s still a truck designed in an era when 85 profile was leading edge. If you want to mess with it’s dynamics it’s up to you.
Anyone wants to put their G55 up against my Peugeot 206 (which has got 45 profiles but it was set up for that from new) on B roads bring it on, it’ll be an absolute hoot.
In fact anyone who actually enjoys driving and understands suspension I suggest you go out and hire any semi reasonable super mini, Ford Fiesta type thing on 65 profile tyres and go for a blast around B roads. After driving your sanitised high end (maybe) cars on wide low profiles you’ll be in for a pleasant surprise.

Back to the subject. Do what you like to our G. Don’t be surprised if you see a yokel pointing and laughing at you though

Oh and back to the original comment about some of the derogatory comments on here about people just trying to sell their G. IMHO it can be completely out of order and as soon as the poor seller responds it just cranks up the nastyness. Not pleasant, generally not informed and certainly not funny

your right that "fat tyres" will give a better ride over rough surfaces, if you drive down rough country lanes regurlay they wouldnt be the best, but if you just do normal driving the pros out weigh the cons, it will grip far better on low profiles and lets just say the turn in is a world of a difference on them. and lets be honest here 99% of this is looks!

It does give a harder ride on the amazom, but its on active suspension, you can have it as hard or soft as you want and at what height you want!
