Got to take the Eldest to Bangor to check out the Uni. Want to take in Snowdonia on the way up and down from Pymouth. Can any Locals suggest a good round trip route to take in the scenery. Have to wimp out of off road as Time and Wife force A roads :( .

Cheers

I was up there in the Summer - take the A5, off on the A4086 and up to Caernavon. Can take the steam train up to the Snowdon Summit and the new 'cafe' from LanBeris I think, but its expensive.
Turn off to Bangor on the B4547 because I didn't think that much of Caernarfon, apart from the castle.

to get to Snowdonia take the Avonmouth exit from the M5 to get to the M4, stay on the M4 until it intersects with the A470, travel up through the Merthyr valley heading for Brecon. You can stay on this road all the way but if you want some spectacle leave the A470 at Llanidloes and take the B road to Machynlleth this takes in Plynlimon and a smashing vista of Snowdonia. Puts half an hour on the journey but you won't be disappointed.

Good place to stop off for a coffee break. The food is cheap and good but the location is simply stunning. We use the FC cafe regularly.

Alternatively don’t go up the A470. Turn left just north of Dolgellau and follow the coast through Barmouth and Harlech and take the toll bridge to Porthmadog.

No where near an A road but it is tarmac is worth a drive
Start 52 52.038N 3 54.873W End 52 51.834N 3 40.536W

I guess Prwales means the B4518. Definately worth a drive.

Or stop off here for a freebie if you want SY10 DX, maybe a slight detour.

Re: Wales

Went up to Bangor on Friday following prwales rotue. Had a fabulous trip. Took our time and visited the woodland centres for refreshments. The Brecon Beacons were interesting and the Wye valley stunning especialy with the Autum colours. Saw hundreds of Red Kites....don't need to see anymore ever! Snowdonia ace even in the rain. Took the Llanberis in the pitch black and rain. Areastill full of walkers and joggers. Came back Saturday evening through the pass in daylight and then joined up with the A5 home. Fab trip hope my Boy gets in to the Uni. Far enough from Plymouth for some peace and quiet, but ace for a weekend visit!

Thanks for the advice chaps and the invite Russ...next time :D

Were in North Wales not far from you and stopped off in Coed y Brenin for lunch today :D

Is yours a red SWB 463?
If so may have seen you (can't remember where, it has been the weekend after all)
