I've been planning this trip for a while (dreaming of it more like) and now it looks like it might actually happen. Planning on driving down to Oz next summer with a friend of mine over a 3 month period.

One of the main things that was holding us back was the cost of the trip. Amazingly the mrs has been totally supportive of the whole thing! Anyway we decided a few months back that we wanted to make a documentary of the trip as a way to share the experience with others, but also as a means to fund the trip. Well we just had a meeting with a TV Channel and they agreed to commission the documentary (Woo Hoo!). I cant say who yet as we need to finalise the detail on the contract, but it looks likely to happen.

Anyway will keep you posted of the prep for the trip, for me and the car. And yes, I'll be taking the G!

:D :D :D :D :D

Thanks Russ. I've not come across that site before, and it seems to be a huge amount of info there. Im sure it will keep me busy for a long time. Cheers!

3 months seems like a long time, but in my case im hoping I can complete the trip in that time. We would have to average about 222 miles per day which is fine in europe but challenging in some parts of asia. Bearing in mind that we will be staying in some places for a few days so means what we will have to cover more mileage on other days to compensate. We may decide to go via Graz too, so a trip to the factory may be on the cards.

I guess it’s completely dependant on the route but I was thinking 12 to 18 months :)

Anyway keep us posted. It’s good to live vicariously sometimes

Love to take that much time but in reality I have to be back here to make some money! Besides the station wants to show it in summer 2011.

You should start with a G-send off and get as many to line up as you drive into the sunset. Or search for members en-route to provide you with a cup of tea and gallon of oil.

Sounds like a good idea, especially if we can incorporate the G as a main bit in the story. The gallon of oil will be most welcome!

Mod,

Dammed right!

Once you have the dates, let me know, where in the countries your aiming to stay, could pop out when I do some work *ahem*

That looks soooo much fun, hope you have some sponsorship from;

Mercedes Benz World (UK)
Mercedes Benz (GmbH)
Mercedes Benz (Gratz)

Seeing as you will have; a documentary team and camera, your driving half way around the world, your a member of the GWOA and your in a Mercedes G - the least they can do is offer some servicing, upgrades or something - though if they offer you a sticker tell 'em to shove it! (BTW you doing this privately or any spare money going to a charity?) Would suggest at least dropping them a note to the marketing..... and as they want to launch the G pure in the UK in 2010 great PR campaign.

In fact I seem to remember that someone else on the forum is doing a sponsored hike across Europe in a G - against all the other LR's - we should at least give him a GWOA send off? and again see if MB will contribute something to 'Help for Heroes'

Luck

Spider1V - mucho

Hmmm... maybe get them to give him a G Pur for the trip then....

maybe an AMG for the campaign manager who came up with the idea as well, would have to have a satellite up-link so I could communicate with the team, while I (G) whizz around the M25......

Yes I would like that!

Re: London to Sydney overland

Thanks for the advice guys. TBH it would have to be a G55 AMG for me! Seriously love to do it in one of those. There is even a new one for sale in the Chelsea showroom in 2+2 configuration. Plus the engine has been set up to allow for poor quality unleaded as originally it was supposed to go to Africa. Prefect for the trip! Hmmm now im thinking....
