Should Have Bought a Toyota
Well guess where I am? Stuck in Tinahir, Morocco with a broken G
Front steering ball joint well and truely goosed. Have found a Mercedes specialist though who is trying to find a replacement. He called his friend who owns a parts shop at 21:30 last night who turned up with his micometer to measure it up and they were still at it at 23:00, try that in the UK :) but no luck yet.
Ah well the joys of being different :)
Wish me luck.
Russ
Russ,
Hope you boys sort it out fast! Is the Steering Ball joint that gig football size shiny thingy that connects the wheel to the car? Is so they look virtually indestructible!
Hope it all gets sorted out soon! Apart from that how is the road trip going?

Hi Joe no its not the big shiny thing its a small not so shiny thing.

Russ glad to hear you back up and running enjoy the rest of the trip i look forward to hearing all about it over a pint or three of the aptly named Thirst Brew when you get back
john
Good to hear you got it sorted!
Russ, glad you got your mishap sorted out. I got stuck in Greece during the summer with a broken viscous fan coupling. Called my local garage in the UK, they got the part and it got sent express: we spent an extra 3 days on a beach and were up and running again with no further ado. The car behaved perfectly for the rest of the trip. Having owned a Landcruiser before, I not ONCE ever thought of going back.......the really impressive thing about MBs is that after sales service is always good. Just in case you're ever stuck, I believe that there is a number you can call in Germany and they courier ship worldwide. Does anyone know what this number is? Good luck on the rest of your trip. ph
Fantastic!
Fantastic!
Lol!
looks like a scene from nicosia cyprus
Now thats what I call "Using" a G, Russ...
Hard to believe this is how she looked when I had her!! :D

It performs remarkably well. Don’t listen to the “experts†who go on about horse power/momentum.
I run with tyre pressures around14psi (allegedly you can go down to 8 but I’ve never attempted that)
It’s fitted with 31 X 10.50 X 15 BFG AT tyres which are very slightly larger than standard fitment. I wouldn’t go any larger due to the adverse effect on the gearing. Even these have made low 2nd a little too long for my taste. Up side is that it’s a little more composed at 120kph+
Through serious soft sand it’s good to keep it at 3,500 rpm plus in low 2nd. No diff locks.
Although there were 3 of us in the G we travel as light as possible taking the absolute minimum of stuff. Note no roof rack required, no fridge etc. Weight being a real killer. It always amuses me to look at the stupid amount of gear (read wasted money) people load their vehicles up with.
Having said all that Morocco is not the place for soft sand unless you actually go looking for it. Most tracks in the desert being rocky or dried lakes.
If you do choose to go dune bashing IMHO it’s probably going to end badly, with a damaged car. I spoke to a guy spoke about someone who had been stupid enough to jump some dunes and smashed his gearbox. Result being a 160km tow and having to sell his winch, roof rack and fridge to pay for a new gearbox. Great way to spend your holiday!
So the basic 603 engined 463 is an excellent choice for this type of trip. Reasonably refined, economic (I had up to 26mpg) but nice and basic with respect to the oily bits. No substandard MB / Chrysler electronics and associated complexity of newer G’s.
Russ :)
Thank you so much for putting my mind at ease...
I know morrocco (4 trips) with my def TD5. No problems at all!
But I changed the def for the exact same car you have...for the comfort & reliability. Altough I completely agree on traveling light, I do take a roof tent and a fridge. But I travel a lot further then morrocco too.
Good tip on the tyres, I wanted to fit 33" and maybe thats not such a good idea then!
2 more questions...is yours an auto? and did you change suspension?
thanks a lot!!!!

Hi Joe no its not the big shiny thing its a small not so shiny thing.
If its not fixable I will put the old prt back on but my sons maybe doing the Draa Valley to Tat Ta which is rather long off road desert driving so it does need sorting b4 then.
Trip is excellent not what i would call a road trip though, mostly desert until yesturday which was mountain pieste.
Bored now though, hence the posts   just want to get back on the road.
Anyway sorry for the spelling but this keyboaed is doing my heqd in :?
