I pulled into a car park, luckily only 1 mile from home, I went for reverse as per usual but the car remained in 1st gear. I can not get it out of first gear.

With the clutch down, the gear lever moves around almost like normal, but you can tell it isnt sliding into its usual slots.

Any ideas, is it a new gearbox?

check that you have not put you vehicle into neutral on the transfer box. The gear lever behind the gear lever if you know what I mean, accidentally pushing this forward can have the effect you describe.

Hi it sounds like one of the rods connecting the gearlever to the gearbox has become detached... probably due to wear.....easy to fix and the bushes come in a kit from MB at GBP 33.50 (as of 9 months ago).if you crawl underneath you can connect it back together and avoid using first gear until you get it repaired......

if all the rods are still conected to the box it could be the gear selector in the car, these can wear also alowing the car to be stuck in gear, cheap and easy to fix

I was told by MB that a bush kit didn't exist. Have I been misinformed?

Mine had a similar issue, turned out a couple of the bushes had been displaced a little. Still need to get round to replacing them though.
