1989 300 GD 460 needs engine help
I bought my G about a year and a half a go with 155.000 miles for £5,000, it now has 160,000. I bought it from a farmer who bought it new. in the last 4 months it kept stalling all the time. I took it to a German car specialist who told me that all the pressure in the valves is hugely reduced (apologies I am a novice with engine terminology). It needs a total engine overhaul or second hand reconditioned engine I think either way looking at around £2,000. Looking at my options, what do you think I would get for it as it is now? (probably not very much) or stick it out and go for an engine overhaul or track down the right engine, which has its problems.
I would love your advice
Thank you
Get the engine you've got overhauled? By someone who knows G's. I don't know about diesels, but sounds like the top end of the engine needs a seeing to.... should be less than £2000. Maybe its just new valves or even grinding and reseating the current ones. Someone else will know.
I agree. I'd have thought you'd be losing out on more than 2k if you try to sell it now in it's current condition. Do Crewe Engines do diesels?
However, if you were to opt for a new/different engine you could consider putting a Sprinter or Ssangyoung TD into it.
Hi some questions first start from cold is the engine rough ..lumpy..slow to start..smoky?...when hot does it idle at about 800 rpm or not idle at all? when hot and running if you take the oil filler cap off does it puff smoke? when driving is it very slow? for info if it is low on compression answers to these questions will help me determine why ......
please get a second opinion and tell fixwin what its doing exactly , he'll know, for the millage it sounnds strange to me,
To answer Fixwin 38
It is a little rough in the mornings had to keep the revs up not happy to idle, certainly not on hills which i thought was a little strange, there was no logic to it.
It has been really smoky in the past but seems to of calmed down after going to a diesel specialist.
I will pass your questions on to the mechanic who is looking at it. It is at the garage so I am not sure regarding the filler cap.
I will let you know
Thank you to all of you
