Hi,

Well My car is now on the road and has been stood for about 7 years and been moved about only short distances! Took it for a long run after MOT and hell of a fun journey haha (brakes failed completely at a roundabout (master cylinder went replaced that works fine! Then couldnt clock more than 20mph whether its in 4 or using the gears fixed that!) Now the mercs get really cot just under red.

My dad opened the rad and it boiled over and had brown water. He checked the oil and its not sludgey and the rad had no traces of oil in it. So I did some reading and lots of post came up around google saying about flushing the rad and engine with of water and rust. So i got rad flush flushed it until just water and did the engine. All water was clean looked in rad and it looked clean aswell! Filled it up with water and done!

Went for a drive that night and the temp came down a bit but not to much. When i got home i checked the water and oild oils fine but waters rusty again!!!! Do you think it needs another flush? I read about takeing the thermostat out but cant find it (not that i know what im looking for!!!!!)

Please say it isnt buggered!!!!

Cheers for your help
Joe

flush it again, if its been standing for 7 years you must expect deterioration, cars need to be used regularly. Though it could well be that the corrosion is so bad that it is causing blockages. Is the radiator heating up evenly and all over its area. If it isn't it would indicate that its blocked. You really do need to check the thermostat and the water pump as well, if they aren't working the water will simply not circulate.

they should be low down at the front of the front of the engine, with a hoses leading from the water pump to the radiator. The Haynes manual for the Mercedes W123 covers this engine.

Hi!

Well a Friend and I decided to take a radiator off my old merc that I used for spares...We found a leak in the old one and the core looked in a really bad way! We also did the thermostat at the same time and found that somebody before had sheared one of the bolts off so we had to take the whole unit that holds the thermostat off and replace that aswell...We looked in side and found that it looks like someone had put the thermostat upside down so when it was opening it was being pushed shut by the water!!!!

Now everything works great :D

Also one more thing what are the small tanks that are attached to the radiators that have oil in them (one to the right and one at the bottom)

many thanks
Joe

sounds like oil coolers, track back the pipes and they will either lead to the engine block or the auto box.

sorry I should also have said fill up with a good quality coolant with a corrosion inhibitor so that this doesn't re-occur
