i'm looking to get a classic, a nice car, somehting that has character, a sporty feel & handles.

I have done the fiat sports, porsche 9's, bmw m's, AMG benz thing, even tried a few 6 & v8 Astons , when they were cheeper !!..what i am loking for is a good reliable well made car of charcter...i dunno something like a spitfire or GT6 , maybe a GTV ,who knows...

Whats was the car that left an impression on you between 1970-1992 ?

Re: classics 70-90

a Morris Minor made an impression on my knees when it skidded on ice back in 1968, still haven't recovered from the bang on the head. Seriously though I'd have been 12-14 years old then and our next door neighbour had a Jensen Interceptor, that was very impressive compared with our Triumph Herald estate.

Not really a sports car, but how about a Saab 96. a mint rally prepped one would be very cool. Run rings round a Spitfire as well :D

You can consider a 190E 2.5-16 EVOI or EVOII
I have currently got a 2.5-16 and it is a great reliable car that turns heads.

The EVO models are very rare and sought after

Good luck

How about something Italian ?? like a 1992 Maserati Ghibli BI turbo for not a lot of money. this one is black with black leather interior. 17641miles on the clock. Serial Number 30 of the 1500 built....driving but no mot or tax.... click onto the Maserati website for more details ....F.Y.I. Ghibli is Arabic for a hot desert wind that lifts the sand !

For my money it would be a Lancia Fulvia 1600 HF Coupe. What an amazing little car. Incredibly stylish too. If your budget will run to it a Fanalone is the only way to go.

OK so you can see them rusting while you are looking at them but it will surprise you how much fun they are to drive.

Failing that a Mog! No not a Mercedes a Morgan! Lots of variety depending on the budget and heaps of fun to drive if you like that wind (or rain) in the hair type of feeling.

I must admit that the Saab 94 suggested above was another inspired thought - What about a two-stroke Monte Carlo version! Superb!

FWIW

Like the Maserati Ghibli BI turbo, good call Fixwin!
Lotus Cortina
Lotus Carlton
Esprit Turbo/V8
Alfa Romeo SZ

Re: classics 70-90

some more suggestions:
VW Corrado VR6 Storm (not the piazza but a great drive and reliable)
Stag with the Triumph V8,
Orginal Audi Quattro
Jenson Healy
Can't rember the model number but there was a big fiat coupe with a Ferrari engine 130? Mind you anything Italian of that vintage is going break a lot
Bristol any
Citroen SM (See Italian comment above) French electrics with a massa engine can't think of anything with a greater propenisty to break down but a gorgoeus car
BMW 850, or older 6 series in CSI spec

my favourite would be (but they are stellar money) the Lancia Stratos

Re: classics 70-90

I've always had a thing for TR6's and I tried to hire one for our wedding last year but the insurance wouldn't cover under 30's so we ended up with a Stag.

I was a bit dissapointed at first but loved it after an hour or so. It handled and went OK but it sounded brilliant (all mouth and no trousers is what they say I believe, I preferred it to the 450SLC that now sits rotting away at my mother's, less transmission whine I think).

For a bit less budget I'd consider a MK1 or MK2 Golf GTi or as a slightly left-field alternaive a MK1 (or possibly MK2) Fiesta XR2. My dad had both when I was 5 or 6 and I loved them. So did he I guess.

Re: classics 70-90

Ooh. I read somewhere about the BMW E30 318is. Meant to be a really good revvy engine. Only made in 89 and 90 I think. A bit different from your standard(!) 325sports. Got to be original though. So many have been 'boyed'.
