Front Wheel falling off !!
This may seem like a daft question, but here goes . . .
What happened;
I was trialling in my 230GE on Sunday and in rapid sucession, and with front diff-lock engaged 1. hit a very solid 2ft high bank with the front end 2. got traction and jumped up the bank 3. launched front wheels 1ft into the air before crashing back down again
After this, I noticed odd noises from off-side-front wheel. Carried on a bit further and then found that though I had drive and it would go forwards, if I tried to go back the wheel would not steer and pulled away from hub.
(called AA and got recovered home)
All suspension and steering links are properly fixed and not bent, but the truck looks "pigeon-toed". The swivel hub and brake disk are in the right place, but looking inside the brake disk from the back, there is a gap which should not be there, and is not at the front.
I don't think it is the king pin swivels, maybe a broken hub bearing or CV joint?
I have looked on the Mercedes EPC site, but it is not clear how the wheel hub is lcated.
I have left it with my friendly local mechanic to look at, but though he has MOT'd it and put a new brake caliper on, mine is the only G-Wagen he has worked on
Can anybody advise what might be wrong, or suggest how to fix it??
sounds like a CV shattered, it will lock up like you said. saw it happen to tony baskill once.
I had a very similar thing happen to my Discovery a while ago. I had just driven 800 miles across France. I got to the check-in at Calais and found that I could only turn left!!! The CV joint was in small pieces (got recovered back to Oxfordshire).
Good luck with your repair.
