Electric fan doesn't work in "I"

My electric fan doesn't work in "I", but works perfectly well in "II", "III" and "IV". Since it is very hot now, I have to use the aircon and sometimes it gets really freezing (and noisy) not being able to operate it in "I". It surely must be the switch, given that the electric motor seems to work fine at all other speeds... any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

it will most likely be the resistor/dropper for the 1st position fan speed control..still means removing it from the dash to access

Jesus
If you fiddle with the switch can you get it to work? My 500 has the same problem with speed 2, however, if I move the switch slightly either side of the position, it will work. It wont stay there though. But that indicates that it is a dirty connection in the switch rather than the resister.

Do you know that it is posible to remove the switch without removing the dash? If you remove the little tray to the right of the radio and remove the nut from the front of the switch. You can push the switch backwards and with draw it from the front. I sprayed terminal cleaner into the switch itslf and that helped but it still is intermittent. Replacement switch is 35quid odd. I could not dismantle the switch, but with your patience, who knows

Ah but Morty has a 463 .. not a 460 so the resistance pack is external to the dash (whereas 460 has it inside the fan housing) and appears to be to the left of the air intake on the bulkhead under the bonnet... item 260 on this link

So 5 mins not 5 hours job.

Many thanks to both.... I think I remember that it used to work if I moved it slightly either side of the right position s maybe it will work if I follow Roly's lead. What I don't understand is what nut to remove... do you access it from the back of the switch (through the hole left when you remove the tray next to the radio) or do you have to prise the switch cover out?

Cheers

Grab the knob with a pair of pliers using a rag to protect the switch, and give it a pull. The knob will come offf easily. Behind you will see the bulb which you remove and the nut which you undo using a pair of long nose pliers. Then push the switch backwards into the void and using one small hand manouvre the switch and withdraw it though the hole.
If the radio wires have been tangled up with the switch wires it may not provide sufficient slack to allow it to be withdrawn therefore you will need to remove the radio and untangle the wires.
Once it is out you can play with a multi meter and check all the speeds to determine if the switch is at fault or another part.
My 500 speed 2 is intermittent at present and I'm trying to justify spending £35 for a new switch
