Hi,

Can anyone help me please?
I have M Reg 200GEL Petrol.

Oil/fluid is leaking from an hydraulic flare-type joint that connects to the Radiator LHS.

The reason is that someone ( before I had it) has stripped the thread on the spigot sticking out from the Rad!

Trouble is I can't find out what parts I need because MB can't tell me if this is an integral engine-oil cooler or a Steering-Fluid Cooler or what???

Does this mean a new Rad?
Or can the spigot/oil-cooler be changed separately? (There is a ring-nut around the spigot).

Many Thanks

eljay

I'll assume you're talking about the car in your profile - the 200GE was an Italy-only car I thought!

If memory serves me right that's an engine oil cooler, integral to the rad. Advice is never to over-tighten those connections. You are probably right - new rad. Try a rad specialist, they should be able to find one (they're made by Behr), might set you back ~£400 if not from the dealer. Or find an old one and recore it, as most people change them because they get clogged with corrossion.

Hi ..MB should be able to identify the type and model of the radiator from the Vin number on the data plate fixed to the air intake duct for the heater in the engine compartment....there are secondary coolers on both sides of the main water cooling part of the radiator and it is one piece...if the assembly is sound and not corroded a specialist radiator repairer may be able to replace the damaged fitting...if the assembly is damaged then a recore is the only option other than a new assembly..recore will be cheaper but still in the region of GBP 400.. the price of a new one from MB will help you make a decision as to the best way forward......financially.

Thanks Guys,

For the moment I've cleaned up the spigot thread, such that the first threads are missing.
And I've manage to get the union-nut on, running true on the later threads, and, (after using more force than I would have liked) the slow drip has stopped.
Excuse my ignorance, but why put an oil-cooler inside the water radiator???
It would seem a recipe for disastrous leaks and inefficient cooling when engine is warm?
Thanks Again

That is exactly what happens..on 463's and saloon cars. corroded radiator cores cause pressurised water leaks into the oilcoolers and at worse this wrecks the gearbox. look for oil in the water expansion tank..this will indicate a radiator fault possibly before serious damage is done...getting the oil out of the water galleries is a nightmare....

Peter,
I wondered before , would this be sommat to do with warming the auto transmission fluid up more quickly in the first instance? ie via the engine coolant?, because otherwise, it would certainly appear more sensible to mount another external cooler, same as the one for the engine oil in front of the radiator.

Hi Marcus the 460/461 has the right idea.. a remote oilcooler adjacent to the main water coolant radiator...I believe that the cost factor was the prime reason for the later radiator design...not much thought went into the long term serviceability of the related components!! with lateral cores that retain hard water sediment and create cold spots in the cooling surface area..in farmers jargon... a bit like putting corrugated roofing sheets running horizontal instead of virtical....with gutters at each end!!!! the marketing strategy for the sale of a specialist coolant fluid might have had some influence as well...

But this is on a manual gearbox vehicle. And it sure smells like engine oil.

Re: What is this Oil Cooler thingy???

the cooler is for engine oil on one side if auto g.box ATF oil on the other...the feed to your cooler should come from low level base of oil filter along side the engine to flexy hoses attached to the top and bottom of the cooler ..if water is leaking into the cooler or oil into the radiator it will show up in the top of the header tank or in some cases as creamy coloured oil on the end of the dip stick....
