Just wonderin if it is considered normal to have slow on and off droning (HMMM - HMMM )sound when driving a 460 at highway speed. and are 460 known for some noise ?
Thanks

I think you need to be more specific, if its an automatic it could be the auto box changing through a ratio or it could be different road surfaces, Can you tell if it is engine, transmission or drive train? Does it come and go depending on speed for example, what is highway speed in Canada, 50, 60, 70 mph. Need more information to offer any useful kind of diagnosis

It is an auto box, highway speed is 100-110km/h. the drone sounds like it is from the front of the vehicle and the it goes away when I let off the accelerator and coast .

Re: normal G noises

are you driving in 2wd or 4wd, is the noise getting worse, is there vibration accompanying the hmmm noise? Are all your tyres at or showing a similar rate of wear, Sorry more questions. Have you driven other g-wagens without these problems? It may be simply engine noise, twin cam engines like this one have a definite change in tone above approx 4,000 revs where the 2nd cam comes into play to improve the engines breathing

Re: normal G noises

This is in 2wd and it doesn't seem to be geting worse, I can slightly feel some vibration in tune with the hmmm noise but doesn't feel too bad. All of the tires have less than 1200km's on them. I have never driven another G other than mine so have no basis for comparing. But I am pretty sure it is not engine noise. I could not find any play in the u-joints of the props but I removed the front prop and the noise does go away, then I installed the prop with the slip at the T-case which is opposite of how it came out and the noise is worse. Does this sound like a u-joint even though it does not have play ?

Re: normal G noises

Hi The front axle drives the front propshaft as far as the transfer box all the time..when you removed it all together the front diff had no load on it so the noise diminished...worn hub bearings have been known to transmit a drone along the halfshafts and into the diff...could be noisy/worn hub bearings which will get worse..a worn front diff which should be checked for any swarf in the bottom of the housing by removing the drain bung and looking for metal particles in the oil....it could also drone with a high and low pitch.....if you find any metal the wear will rapidly get worse....the propshaft crosses should have clean grease exuding from the swivels and the tube should slide evenly along its travel.......put it back on the right way round and look for mating marks on the edge of the flanges....lastly it could be tyre noise at those speeds......

Re: normal G noises

Thanks for the comments, The hub bearings are only 1500km's on them and I have rechecked the clearance to be right around .001" on a dial indicator. I have also now changed the diff oil and had the cover off and it looks good and no metal swarf. The crosses all had grease come out when greasing but not sure when they were last greased as I have only had the G for 6 months. Also is there a correct way for the shaft to be in ( slip at the diff or T-case) I could find nothing in my manual that says?

Thanks

Re: normal G noises

Your car is also 26 years old; noise vibration and harshness are much better understood now than they were then, take consolation in the fact that the equivalent aged Landcruiser will have dissolved into brown powder by now. Enjoy

Re: normal G noises

Hi Instal the front propshaft with the male end bolted to the T'case...you can then slide the long section onto it....makes it easier to handle and proves that the sliding function is smooth...lack of grease in the shaft between the G'box and T'box can cause vibration but should not drone.....
