My 1991 G300 speedometer is making those terrible click noises. I have been told it has a broken tooth drive , can it be fixed? dont know.what car would be a suitable donor for this unit?

Re: speedometer

Hi Shakir,

I have a spare console if you're interested. From a 1991 so should be identical.

Let me know.

Cheers

Re: speedometer

Hi the inner speedo drive cable has lost all lubrication after many years of service and can cause the "clicking" ..remove the instrument cluster with two thin levers (one either side) and unscrew the cable..go underneath and unscrew the cable there.mix a drop of petrol and twostroke oil into a pump type oilcan shake well and apply to inner drive cable from the dash end...it is a very slow process until liquid drips out of the other end.. connect both ends and go for a drive.if the click is still obvious after 5/10 miles then the damage has been done and the drive head at the transmission may need to be replaced...if click disappears.... after 500 miles unscrew both ends of the cable and lube with very light oil..should last another 10 years....or 30.000 miles at least.....

Re: speedometer

so what you are saying is, my speedo is ok , but the drive head at the transmission is probably gone, assuming the cable is OK. I dont know everyone else thinks it is the speedo. I need to get my hands dirty. Cannot trust anyone nowdays.

Re: speedometer

Hi... take the cheapest route first ..a dry inner rotating drive cable will cause erratic needle movements and clicking..it also puts a strain on the gears in the drive cable to transmission interface unit. these are nylon and will shed teeth if the drive cable resistance becomes to great. the indicator in the console is driven by a magnetic disc and drag cup.the more revolutions of the drive cable the bigger the deflection on the pointer.if the odometer section is not working it can cause a click every tenth of a mile as it tries to roll the numbers... if you are witnessing rapid deflections of the pointer to match the clicking then it is most likely a dry drive cable or worse ..teeth missing of the nylon gears.....resulting from lack of lubrication between the outer sheath and inner rotating drive cable ......
