Wayne Rooney’s Mercedes G55 AMG for sale

17 October 2008

by Adrian Hearn
A special edition 476bhp Mercedes G55 AMG off-roader previously owned by England’s midweek scoring sensation Wayne Rooney is for sale on Auto Trader.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney – who has scored FIVE times in his last three England appearances – was the first owner of this 2005 Mercedes G55 AMG which was built to celebrate 25 years of the G Wagon.

Wayne Rooney is the second England star in as many days to have an old car for sale following David Beckham’s customised Bentley Arnage which is also on Auto Trader.

Manchester United star Rooney is famous for his love of cars and it’s not the first time one of his old motors has been on Auto Trader.

In the past, we have featured his Aston Martin Vanquish and Mini GP. While amazing cars, Rooney's old Merc will hold its own in terms of rarity.

Costing around £100,000 new, Wayne Rooney’s old Mercedes G55 AMG is powered by a supercharged 5.4-litre engine which develops 476bhp and 516lb/ft of pulling power.

Channelled to all four wheels, the 2.5-tonne Mercedes G55 AMG will accelerate from 0-62mph (100kph) in just 5.6 seconds and 0-124mph in 23 seconds before being electrically limited to a top speed of 130mph.

But while this is stunningly quick, the Merc G Class’s natural home is in the rough stuff – but because of the power upgrades from the V8 engine, Mercedes had to make a range of adjustments to cope off-road including reworking the suspension and brakes.

The Mercedes G55 AMG comes with a five-speed low range gearbox and three manual locking differentials which provides increased traction to the wheels with most grip.

After a few years of underperforming for the national side, Rooney has reignited the form first seen when the Merseysider exploded onto the international scene at the 2004 European Championships.

Under the watchful eye of Fabio Capello, Rooney has forged a formidable strike partnership with Wigan Athletic star Emile Heskey – helping England to their best ever start to a World Cup qualifying campaign.

Rooney scored in the famous recent thrashing of Croatia in Zagreb before scoring twice against Kazakhstan and a further two against Belarus in midweek.

His Man United teammate Cristiano Ronaldo has also hit the headlines recently for buying a Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe and the registration plate CR7 for £150,000 while his old Bentley Continental appeared for sale on Auto Trader.

The England star’s old Mercedes G55 AMG – which has covered just 14,000 miles and had two owners – is for sale with Nottinghamshire-based luxury car dealer Wheelhouse for £59,995.

40% depreciation over 4 years not great and though comparable with more humble cars, 40% of £100,000 is a huge loss. But to Mr Rooney only a couple of days pay. What an insane world.

I didn't say that you were, what I said was that without the Shah's order there would be no g-wagen. What I was implying was that an order from a monarch is not exactly how the "free market" is supposed to operate.

The British would also not have got Challenger 1 (Tank) either. The first batch were apparently not going to go to the Shar, but he was deposed and so we tool them. Rather good for the British Army and for G Wagen owners, maybe I will raise a toast when I am next down at the bar! 8)
