I got a 280 very tired lwb for the project, thanks Russ. I was also offered a 463 which would have been perfect, but the deal fell through.

Now I am ready for prototype 1!

First thing is to get the car through MOT, I don't want to go Marty's route of doing all the work and then fail. So brakes, brake lines, indicators, rust welded (a lot), cracked manifold, new switch on gearbox for reverse lights and start only in P & N, front wheel bearing and fix 1 seatbelt should get me through.

All of this before Friday morning 9:45

Please beware that I am new to mechanics, except for when I broke down in France and Mervin Weaver sent me parts and talked me through fixing my front diff and brakes, so there might be a lot of questions.

Cheeky B****x! Christo!!

Mine was perfect....bar a few tweaks...the MOT guy just didn't feel the love :D

Upshot...spent £500 fixing what didn't need doing and getting a worse truck in the end (Albeit an MOT'd one!!)

I'll save you a bit of time...NOT a testable item.

I always thought that functional reversing lights were a test item?

Re: Pick up

Saw Martys Pick up last night and man Its class. I have to Admit there is a bit of "envy " on my part but in a good way .

Marty you have done a good job on that machine and as usual ( marty perfection has been added to this pick up ).

Leeu you have a lot to live up to to get it to this . I am sure it can be done as you are a "boer" like me and we are born on pick ups on the farms so come on "BOET" the challenge is on .

Re: Pick up

Marcus I suppose I fell into it .hahhaah.

Ye vehicles like gwagens and the copies like Landcruiser with the closed cabs is a new thing in Africa . The only type of closed cabs that we had for years were double cabs espcially Toyota Hilux. We always had pick up type transport on the farms and would never farm with a closed type as its not practical.

Re: Pick up

Marty, I said I didn't want to do all the work like you, get all exited, only to fail the MOT. That is the reason I am getting it before I really start.

Today didn't go well. I thought I had everything sorted, but the "bakkie" still failed on 9 points. Leaking shock, worn disc, some more welding, numberplate not secure, leaking brake pipe, and a few other items. I will pick it up today and get the full list.

I am changing strategy though. I think I should just replace everything that can come lose on the car, rubbers, pipes, bushes, etc. That way I will know it is right and I am not cutting before everything is 100% underneath.

I am still considering what engine to fit as well. The plan was a 803, then a 290 TD, the 320 CDI's will be great and I found someone to sort the electrics. At this stage I am with keeping the 280 and fitting LPG kit. How much stronger is the 300 petrol than the 280?

Re: Pick up

Probably not enough to warrant the hassleof changing it I'd have thought.

Re: Pick up

Never mind 9 items, it is 16 items it failed on. This guy definitely don't feel the love!

What is worrisome is the rust on the chassis where the top of the rear shock fixes, it is almost rusted off. It was crusted and I didn't expect it to there, but that will need some serious welding. Also the round pipe running across the car just behind the front wheels is off on the inside.

Better get started then, just bought a welder and an angle grinder with some discs. Any welding tips?

Re: Pick up

Just finished, now the MOT guy must just feel the "love" tomorrow morning 9:00. I think I can start giving welding lessons now, thanks to the tips from Mark Vulture and a lot of practice on my car. I would put some picture up, but I don't know how. The thing holding the top of the rear shock proved completely rotten and I had to rebuild most of it. Got all the rust off, even bought a dremmel tool to get into tight bits, treated all steel and welded it all together and even if I have to say it myself, it looks fantastic.

I picked up a few more problems underneath, as I said I am replacing everything I can, bit I will mention and ask about them in more relevant posts.

Now lets hope all goes well tomorrow.

Re: Pick up

17:30 it says on the MOT cert, but that doesn't matter now, the main thing is I got it. The hand break failed to impress the MOT guy. no matter what I did, I couldn't get it to work properly. At the end I stopped around the corner and just tightened the rear pads as much as they can go. The car would then stand still even if the hand break was down!

Now I have the MOT, but I still need to sort out the handbrake, but I think I am going to change the whole break system, new calipers, cylinders, pipes etc, so then I will worry about it.

In the mean time Peter sourced me a G with a 463 engine fitted for parts, I will pick it up in Dublin on Tuesday.

Re: Pick up

Things have been a bit troublesome on this side, but work on the pick up will start again in 2 weeks when it will be time to get the grinder out.
