Engine swap 617 to 603
Hi , ive have engage my self on a little journy into putting a new engine in my car. I have a 460 300gd 84, with a automatic transmission. i got hold of a 300td from a 124 salon car. 147 bhp, almost the same as a 350gd engine. has any body done that job before? i have some problems!
The hole vacum system is controels by small switches, how are they controeld? buy the ELR or?? or can i skip some part of that?
Must i have the ELR unit working and install all eletronic to adjust my engine, and how important is it to install the temperatur gauge to the preheat/glowplug system? I am about to get hold of a 463 300ge, would i be better to put that engine, in that car and convert a petrol to diesel?

Hi if your host engine has electronic fuel management it is very very difficult to retrofit into a 460 G'wagen. the compromise engine is the OM 617A which is almost a straight swop except for the exhaust and throttle linkeage re routing....
I have access to a SWB 460 280ge automatic that has the OM 603 engine installed and working... the vehicle is currently for sale in Northern Ireland for not a lot of money any interest? rgds Peter
Hi, have you managed to fit the 603 into your 460. I have recently trashed my 617 and was thinking of trying the same conversion. if you have found anyone who has managed this any advise would be appreciated. I would love to find a 617a but this seems unlikely within my budget but there do seem to be a fair amount of w124s available for not a lot of money. cheers Richard

Hi. Thanks for the quick reply! My new 603 engine does not have electronic fuel management. Every thing is like 617. but the idel is controeld buy an ELR unit. Witch is controling the Electronic magnetic actuator, the electronic idel regulation, overvoltage suppressor, and speed sensor. Basicly it is a g350 engine. But since i dont need/have youse of all the information i can get from the engine, i was wondering if i can cut some corners? or if anybody havs done this swap before? i have a 617a engine but was looking for a newer design engine. 617 is a old design, and i could youse a better fuel economy. So iam trying a 603. Thanks Sune
