I have recently received my new diif carrier and compared to my old one and found that the bores where the side gears spin were worn .022" !! so I installed the new carrier and set everything to spec, so far so good. Then I installed new rear wheel bearings on the axles with new kit ( seals, holder, crush sleeve etc..) I am replacing the wheel bearings because of play found when pulling / rocking on the rear wheels. After installing all of this new the play in the rear wheel bearings has not changed at all. Does anybody have any suggestions or have similar play on their rear axle / know of any spec for play in and out ?

I have posted this on P3 also looking for some help!!
Thanks

Kurtis

Re: rear wheel bearings revisited

Hi Kurtis,

Failed an MOT recently with the same problem.

Bought 2 new kits from Merc (£200). My mechanic fitted one side - no difference. He thankfully stopped, saving me one kit + shimmed the bearing and the other side. No play now at all. He said the bearing had been fine, but the housing was worn.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the info, Do you know how much he shimmed it.....how much pre-load or just to take up to zero pre-load? if that makes sense ?
Example: if mine has .5mm play did he shim it .5mm or more

Thanks

Unfortunately I didn't carry out the work myself...so can't really comment.

I'd imagine it was the case that he shimmed to the full tolerance...i.e if it was 0.5mm....he would shim to that.

Anyone else got an idea?

SKF catalogues give preloads .. need to know the number/size of bearings but they are based upon new bearing that need to bed in. Taking it down to zero would be best starting point.. maybe just a little over the same as you do front/tappered wheel bearings etc.
