I have a set of Kumho's, they are wider than an equivalent BFG, and to be fair I prefer the BFG for mud but the 71's are good on rock and dry as the compound is softer. But you can get the 71's cheaper than that !. BFG will last 4 times as long.

You pay your money, you take your choice!

I think the KL71 look super and in these days of belt tightening maybe they are the ones to go for, all things considered. OR maybe silverstone in the simex extreme copy pattern, these use a silica based compound so should have better road manners than the OE simex.

The BFG MUD T/A are getting hard to source at the moment with the introduction of the replacement pattern rumoured to be immiment. Its hard to beat them as an everyday tyre and suitable for the mud too, their high cost is somewhat diminished by the fact the bloody things last so long.

Have fun deciding. The 285 tyre will rub on full lock a non lifted 463 with mud T/A tyres on and no spacers fitted.

Mike

Hi Bushcraft,

I've only had BFGs for the last few years: can't beat the wear, but also the sidewalls are MUCH stronger than either the Kumhos or the Coopers by a massive amount. Try traversing tricky wet slightly muddy slopes in the latter two and you'll start slipping. I've found the BFGs will hold better and also the 'built-in' beadlock works pretty well. Can't fault them! I must admit, I haven't tried the Generals which are supposed to be quite good, but like I said I have no personal experience with them.

If you're after pure offroad, the MTs really are much much better than ATs. If however, you're wanting to cover a lot of road miles and tow, the ATs are so much quieter and more comfortable (no knobbly starts, especially with weight on the tow bar). Also, they're not too bad off road.....just take boards, shovel, pickaxe and (if you have it) winch with you and you'll be able to do 95% of what ALL the mud boys can.

Happy hunting,
Ph

P.S. Can't help you on the size. I have 275/75 ATs on my G at the moment with standard springs (still!!! but this will change soon) and have no rubbing problems. I'd be interested to see how you get on with the 285s. By the way, if you're going to go down the MT route, think also about the 255/85s. It's slightly taller than the 285/75 and usually you don't have steering lock problems. This slimmer/taller size is VERY popular with the Land Rover crowd. I just don't know if they're OK on a G. Maybe one of the others could tell us. Also, I don't know how much they'd kill your on-road performance. Anyone???
