Plastic tank removal
Hello, and I hope you can help. I have to remove my plastic diesel tank on my 89 300 gds. I assume it may be straightforward. If anybody would like to explain likely problems it will be most helpful. many thanks Vic
Hi Vic, is yours a 460? If it is then this is a replacement tank from a 463 because all tanks on 460's of your vehicles were steel. The steel tanks do corrode, top down and this can lead to problems though if its a plastic one this ought not to be an issue at all. I have taken off tanks on both the 460's that I have owned but not on my 463 and hope that I will never need to. The principle though must be the same, run your car till the tank is near empty, disconnect all the hoses, the battery, unscrew the access hatch under the floor in the boot area so that you can pass a rope around the tank to hold the tank in place. and then unbolt the steel straps which hold the tank in position. Then you can lower it from there rather than have it drop on you whilst you are underneath.

Easy job...but daft not to replace the straps as they are a regularly failing item:

And I'm NOT just shamelessly pushing these!! :D :D

Thanks very much, I thought that the later 460,s had the plastic tank, this one is 1989. The info. you have provided is most helpful. thanks Vic
