Hello!

I was wondering if you could be any help with our project of a G-wagon on Mog axles.

If you have any links of such sort it will be appreciated if you could forward them to me.

My brother and I have been wanting to do this for sometime now and now that we have found the appropriate G-wagon, with some help we can begin.

The subject is a 280GD, 1982. The Unimog's diff available here in Pakistan are of the U416, if I'm not mistaken. Are those good enough?

We want a bit of an all-rounder--good on road n highways n excellent off-road. We don't plan to keep the same engine...something new with a 5 fwd transmission...any suggestions? When I say 5 speed, i mean something which cruise nicely and not make it a painful experiance!

Could anyone also tell me how much work we are looking at exactly? Both of us have a good mechanical aptitude but we have never tried anything of this sort before.

You reply will be greatly appreciated.

Thank u,
Omar

Hi Omar, you are setting your self quite a task but I think that your vehicle will have to compromise in some way as improving a car for off road use will inevitably compromise it on the road. There was no gd280 in the model range but there was a ge280 a 6 cylinder twin cam engine which is powerfull enough but thirsty, there was also a gd300 a 5 cylinder diesel which despite being tough as old boots is slow. Does your car have an auto box? If you do have the ge280 with a manual then I would stick with that and simply fit a larger wheel and tyre combination, this with a chassis lift of say 2" would give you improved off road ability without trashing the ride quality on the road. These kits are readily available from such suppliers as ORC. The g-wagen is pretty good off road anyway perhaps not quite as good as your Pinzgaur but a pretty close match for the Land Rover..
good luck, the site below has an interesting conversion of a Unimog with what looks like a Pinzgaur body on top of it?

Re: Project G-Mog

hey Prwales,

I'm sorry, its not 280 but its a 240GD manual.
The thing is that we are pretty set on doing the conversion with portals...unless it requires MAJOR mods.

As far as on road performance is concerned, i guess all we are asking is a reasonable highway cruising speed of 130 km/h staying within 3500rpm on a diesel motor.

Cheerz!

Re: Project G-Mog

the 240 is the 4 cylinder version of the 5 cylinder 3 litre engine, if you were to swap you would get more torque and power but your top speed will depend on the axle ratios in your Mog and these are a lot different to those of the g-wagen. I would guess to achieve that speed with Unimog axles you would need a very high revving petrol engine and such an engine would lack the torque characteristics you want for off road use. Nevertheless your project is probably worth doing in its own right as the body of the g-wagen is much more user friendly than that of the Unimog but whilst it will excell off road it will be as slow as any Unimog on the road.

For the motor we plan to do a swap with something like a 5 cly, 3.0ltr TD with a 5 speed box. Not sure what kinda speed it'll offer but something new under the hood would make sense n be cool!

I'm being told that I cant do 416's axle with a G :(
