Hi Guys just wanted to find out about colour coding the wheel arches on my G can you just spray the existing arches or do i need to buy new metal/fibreglass arches and have them painted to suit?

Thanks

Freddie

A good place to start would be to attach a photo of your arches, or similar ones at least, so that people get an idea of exactly what part you are talking about. Also it will help determine which ones you are on about, the fender-extenders came in different materials and widths, fiberglass being one of them.
Would also help if you fill up your profile with the vehicle in question, to save people asking you in the future about what car you are talking about...

I think that you need to coat the wings with a plactisier before colour coding because if you do not the paint will crack and fall off. Any body shop should be able to do this for you as they have to do this on a daily basis with plastic bumpers

Re: Wheel Arches

I did mine.

There are at least 2 types of MB arches.. some have "texture" which mine did.. took a while with dual action sander and some 300 grit disks to remove the texture.. then a little filler with plastic filler .. then a special keying primer.. and finally you should put plastisier into the paint (I did not and have no issues so far... 2 pack is pretty tough stuff).

So yes it can be done but about 1.5 hours min prep per arch if you had distressed or textured arches will make it expense to pay someone to do it..

Hmm mgrays did you spend any time at a bodyshop by any chance? Your methods seem to be "rigourous" hence excellent results, where can one go to improve paint/filling techniques, aside from an NVQ/College course?

Re: Wheel Arches

No time in bodyshops but it seems like I spent the last 2 years in my temporary spray booth learning about 2 pack. Resprayed first car at 17, second at 20 ... then a wee break for a decade or so .. about 7 years ago did all but the roof (all cellulose) on my 70's Italian. Then took on the G (80's car) and 2 pack which I learn by talking to a couple of part time and ex sprayer at work. Last month I did half my summer car (90's car).. and still need to do the rear bumper on the daily driver (00's car). Then .. maybe I could remove the temporary spray booth.. which would be nice :-).
Really don't like painting but it needs done..

Oh and the secret which I and MB use is filler primer.. lots of it and then rub down to get a smooth finish. I could not believe how much the factory put on!!

Re: Wheel Arches

It's a long long way... 400 miles from Stafford when I looked last night which is £200 fuel for a return G trip at 20mpg towing an ebay prize and trailer.. anyways there is room at the inn .. if no sofa(s) yet!

Ta for the kind words of encouragement. Might even have fixed the shed one day.. sort of 60x45' of playroom for cars..
