Would it be possible to connect an auto box from a 280ge to a V8 500.
Box out of 280 should be a W4A018 and a 500sec should be W4A040.
Does anyone here can help me with the gear ratio's of the latest. (W4A040)
Thanks in advance.
Best regards,
dc

Re: Automatic tranny?

Hello G500,

I do not know the answer to your question in ernest, but I would have thought that a 280 GE box would be inheriently under powered to take power of a V8 - 500 engine. I am certain you would end up blowing your box in no time. I could be wrong, but my inclination would be to say, No.

I will try and put this question to ZF gearbox who produce the M/benz box; if, I hear from them, I will certainly pass back the info.

Cheers,

Re: Automatic tranny?

Most auto boxes are designed for a certain maximum torque. The type number of the box usually contains a suffix code related to the design torque, and MB tend to use 3 or 4 gearbox models for any model of vehicle depending on engine size. It is therefore unlikely that the gearbox from a 280GE will handle the torque from a more modern engine with twice the power. However, the gearbox in question is likely to be a ZF version and with the model code, you can look up its design limits.

Re: Automatic tranny?

Thanks for the advice.
The auto tranny is from 1986 and the v8 from 1985.
I'm still looking for the ratio's of the W4A040. So far havn't found the info.
Can somebody point me in the good direction.
Where could I find these design limits.
Thanks in advance
Best regards,

I have already put this question to ZF Gearbox, waiting on them to answer, if you want you could do the same on their web-site. Alternatively, you may ask of Mercedes Benz customer services for the info., either case you will have to wait for them to answer back. Sorry.

Re: Automatic tranny?

The torque design figure is part of the gearbox designation. the W4A 018 is good for 180 nm. The other W4A 040 400nm.
The V8 produces probably twice the torque the 018 g/box could handle reliably.

You can find most of the gearboxes fitted to the G here:
