I figure someone on here must....not exactly G related I know so apologies to the purists but thought I'd try my luck.

After such a lovely weekend it seems like it's time to get a convertible but not sure which. I've decided to go for the 129 over the 107 for practicality/usability. Anyone got any advice on which engine to go for/avoid and whether or not the facelifted models are worth the premium?

Cheers all,

Tom

PS if this is too irrelevant I won't be offended if it gets removed!

Get the 230 with 7 speed gearbox! It is absolutely fantastic!

I think Spider used to have a SL...

Re: Anyone know much about SL's?

In '98 the engine changed to the 113 v8 which is a top motor. Prior to that the engine was a 24valve DOHC engine and was a bit more troublesome. There are 3 of those engnes on ebay now.
You would be well advised to join the MBUK club before buying an SL. Those guys know sls like we know Gs

I'm not sure that any of the 129's have the 7 speed box, that came out too recently didn't it? Also, I assume you mean 320 not 230....one must have at least 6 cylinders :)

96 ONWARDS FACELIFT V6 320 WITH A PAN ROOF IS AS GOOD AS ANYTHING!
REAR SEATS ARE A DESIRABLE BUT PRETTY USELESS OPTION.
SOME OF THE LIMITED EDITION MODELS REALLY NICE AS WELL.

If you phone Catherine on this link here http://www.mercedes-benz-club.co.uk/public/howtojoin.htm you can join tommorrow and then you'd have full site access including the forum where our 129 SL register captain is a daily visitor.Another benefit of the club is they now have free access to the official Daimler EPC (electronic parts catalogue), not to be confused with those cheap ripped ebay copies that are a sod to make work.

Nik knows his onions + his SL's!!

Bought this one a year or 2 ago, as a 40th B'day pressie. Sold it to the wife because it had the rear seats....but agree they were next to useless!!.
Still enjoyed her for a while...a very well put together "Proper" Merc.

Re: Anyone know much about SL's?

i had several SL's the 107 is solid as a rock, drives superb, with classic lines & as usual good 30mpg, steady away..bullet proof, best one is the smooth 300sl 1986-1990, better spec the better. all are diffrent spec , look around the headlights, & rear arches under the boot carpet, & lift the horse shoe that covers the soft top..Niiice.mechanics are DIY, easy..check jacking points are clean..

129 320sl is the one, if you fancy a upgrade, modern lines..more garage costs & plug up analasys stystem, pretty much as before ,bulletproof..check the roll over bar , hasnt been activated, as above, just newer. mileage dont matter , with regular oil services.

check mileage is genuine, not many are !! check all documents, steering wheel wear, all must drive firm, if it feels like a sponge at 80k..leave it alone , they are tight & solid. seat wears at 90k miles in all fabrics & leather, if it genuine at 80/90k miles , the drivers bolster will have a 10p hole, if its been re conolised, beware of anything under 80k... ask your self why ?? & with all sl's dont grab the lil'ol lady tale that hardly used it !! hahahahahah thats why its only 32k, yeh right...how many lil'ol ladies have them.... Look at at least 10 cars , when you find the right car , you will know..@ the right price.

No... sorry, I meant R230. :( I saw you typed 129 so i guessed you would assume 230 = R230. I think many R230s have 7 speed gearbox? Please Correct me if i were wrong!

Re: Anyone know much about SL's?

I see, so R230 is the chassis designation of the later SL is it? If so it's not for me. I want a 129 for now, then a 107 once I've got somewhere to keep it.....maybe in 15 years the new ones will be old enough for me to want one!

Just joined the club. Thanks for all the advice everyone.

Seen 3 so far. The most genuine one was last night.... Same owner for last 8 years... Just under 90k (drivers bolster worn accordingly)...AMG wheels (that I'd sell and put the originals back on)....reasonably priced and not too far away. Lookedlike it might have had a nudge at the front at some point though, bumper was slightly out of shape, bodywork seemed fine though. Will definately have a look at a few more before purchasing.

Re: Anyone know much about SL's?

Do you have an engine in mind? or are you more interested in the body and condition

Re: Anyone know much about SL's?

Well, I thought an engine would be a good accompaniment to the body

Sorry...seriously now....I'm open to suggestions. 280 seems a bit pointless though. 320 or 500 I guess. Condition, colour scheme and cost would dictate which. I'd like black interior but not exterior. Doesn't need to be pristine, just looked after. I'd rather see a few scratches than resprayed panels.

Re: Anyone know much about SL's?

Hmmmm if your looking for a 500, you may want to look for an AMG variant? Very, very nice car. FMBSH is a must though and if you can get the cover off look around the top of the engine block for any leakage. If in doubt, don't bother.

With the market the way it is, there is bound to be one floating around somewhere. The noise is just amazing, as is the speed and road holding, though the suspension can be accused of being to harsh against a 500.

Good colours; Silver, Black, Tanzanite Blue and if you can find one, the gun metal grey (sorry I don't know the MB name for it, but is a little bit like Tecktite with a hint of brown) though I think that was a special.

Luck with your search!
