Hi All,

Could you please advise me on the work and parts involved in making a RHD drive G into a LHD?

The obvious question is WHY??

Due to a recent move a don't have the space for it anymore but i also don't really want to get rid of her as she is goodun!
I want to give it to my sister in Holland as she needs a car to ferry the kids about but is a bit hesitant of the righthand drive aspect.
Also as the G is over 25 years old she wont attract the astronomical high roadtax that they have in Holland ( I 'think' in the region of 2000 Euro per year  )

so that is the WHY, now the how?

I realise I will need the following:

LHD steeringbox
LHD dash
Do the pedal boxes swop over or do I need new ones, or can they be 'made' to fit?
What steering components (note absence of technical terms :D )
Move battery tray
anything else?

What are the thoughts on this?

Many thanks for your help

regards

Richard

Steering arms drag links. Can't she drive a RHD in Holland? Not worth it

Re: RHD to LHD?

i'd think it's probably cheaper to sell yours and buy a factory LHD
this is actually the first time i've heard people wanting to do a RHD-LHD conversion

It may well be cheaper but he says he doesn't want to get rid of it as it's a good'un.....BUT.....it'll be an awful lot of hassle and you just might turn it into a not-so-good'un in the process. I suggest your sister at least try's it out in RHD first.

Re: RHD to LHD?

You have most of the bits listed your self, you may need steering coulomb from the s/box up to bulk head, and/or, from bulkhead to the s/wheel; not sure if these shaft lengths differ. You may need different links to the pedal for the accelerator link rod.

Pipe work from the brake m/cylinder to bulk head unions will need re-routing. Wiring loom need modification to extend wire connections from RHS to LHS. Main battery positive wire to be re-wired to LHS. The fuse box and ALL it’s wiring to be changed (night-mare of an electrics job). Unless you commission a good 'sparky', you will always have electrical gremlins that you probably have to live with.

The cost for conversion will be astronomical. It would be prudent to sell this and by a LHD. You should not have difficulty in selling this as it does look like in good condition.

Thanks all for your thoughts.
Might have to think about this again....
Wether it is worth it? My sister won't drive a RHD, period. An equivalent G in LHD in Holland would set me back about 8000 pounds, in the UK I reckon mine is worth about 2 grand if I'm lucky. Gives me something to play with, although it will still cost..

Plenty to think about

Thanks again
Richard

Why is that Richard?

I have lived in the UK for almost eight years, during which I have owned and run LHD Gs. Having owned other lesser RHD vehicles while living there, I never missed the G being RHD: the driving position is such that you have loads of visibility. And being so slow you never attempt to overtake anyway.

My 2 pence...

I know Mortinson, I know! I drove a lhd car in the Uk for years with no real problems.
Tried to convince her again today by taking her out in my rhd car in Holland, NOPE!

I might just import it, give it to her and see how she gets on.

Cheers

Richard

Re: RHD to LHD?

richard, isa you forget the core of the matter...

the main subject, problem, brick wall is a SHE.

paranoya will not allow her to drive it. i have ruby [rhd] and my cabrio [lhd]. i love driving them both but SHE will not drive the cabrio because its lhd :?

i wouldnt mind doing a swap with my lhd parts for your rhd bits and pieces. but you would need to bring it here to north cyprus for a month or so...[labour is very reasonable] and the work could commence. i can ring you when its ready and you can pick it up and drive it over to her.

have a think about it....

if you was to sell it.....pm me maybe
