The cats on my exhaust started to rattle a few months ago and now they have got so bad that at traffic lights people look at the car to see what the noise is!!

My local MB dealer said that replacement parts would be around 1,500 Euros . Although they are not allowed to do it themselves, they suggested cutting out the cats and welding in a length of pipe. They said this would not affect the MOT emission tests.

I was wondering if anyone has done this before or has any thoughts on the subject. Would it change the fuel consumption, engine performance or the emissions?

Thanks
Richard

Re: Exhaust Cats

There is no problem in terms of fuel consumption, emissions' etc, just double check with the MOT Tester when the date for KAT not being part of emissions came in. I was under the impression that that period for this was before 1992 model where you could just fit in a pipe instead of the KAT. Your model is a 1999 - Diesel.

I thought that diesels did not need catalysts anyway and that they were purely for petrol engine cars to remove nitrous and reduce carbon monoxide emissions

Re: Exhaust Cats

Your 300td will have only one CAT and it appears that CATS for diesels are still a vague situation in the UK..the German TUV insisted on CATS and the routeng of the G'exhaust to emit gases to the centre of the road (LHD G's) 1994 was the first requirement for CATS on petrol engines in the UK.I have no idea what the French regulations are regarding diesels...

Thanks very much for the info. I'm going to go ahead and cut them out.

All the best
