Removing starter 300GE/G300, must the intake come off??
Hello again,
I wonder if the more experienced out there might have an idea.
In my fumbling around in the recent sunny weather I tried to get the starter out (on right side of engine, beneath intake manifold). The bolts turned out to be the least of my problems, it would not slip out from underneath, nor from the side/top. Must the intake manifold be removed (which involves removing coolant hoses/draining coolant) or is there some other way I am missing.
Only thing I haven't thought of is removing the wing, if that is a simple job? Then it comes out the side.
I have read this thread for guidance:

Thanks in advance...
Not neccesarely.
It's quite complicated to unbolt the upper nut holding starter accessing it with your hand through the opening between steering box and intake, but it's possible. I did it. I used the other opening on the other side of the intake to help the "targeting".
Lower nut is easily accessible with socket wrench on 0,5 meter extension.
If your arms are as thick as Arnold Schrtzenegger's, then the intake should be taken off.
Only as a last resort.
It should be possible to remove the s/motor, but if my memory serves me right, there is a support bar underneath the inlet manifold you need to undo, before the s/mtr can be extracted. With that, one, has to twist and turn out the s/mtr.
There have been only a few cases where I have had to take off the inlet manifold, or more correctly just remove the bolts and the inlet manifold moves enough to allow the extraction of the s/mtr. The manifold can just remain where it is.
Cheers,
LHD it is
Thanks for your reply. Fortunately the bolts came off easily with a few extensions to the back of the transmission, but I suspect you're speaking of aa LHD version as my steering box is diagonally opposite the starter in the engine bay..
