Type 462?
Now here's a silly question. I know there are W460, W461 and W463 G's. But what about a W462?
462 is a CKD... found in Greece, Indonesia...
Complete Knock Down - they are generally military Gs and are offered by MB when in order to win the contract, the purchasing country demands that a certain percentage of the G is built in their country.
Hence the parts are shipped out the country and a local factory is established where the G is built to the needed specifications.
The old Peugeot P4s also have a VIN number starting with 462.
I wonder, what about the ones built in Indonesia...
i've never seen a local (indonesian) that bears the 462 number.
all the civilians are either 460 280GEs, sold until '92, if i'm not mistaken
and 463 300GEs, sold '93 - '98
don't know about the 290GDs used by the military police though
in Greece the army G's had wdb 462 starting vin number the most recent ones have wdb460 &wdb 461
I believe that Max is right: all military 460s bore in the early days a 462 VIN number (Greece, Turkey and French P-4s). I suspect that Indonesian Gs were assembled later, when Mercedes decided that all military Gs would bear a 461 VIN were they finished at Graz or not. But with Gs you can never be too sure
Wow, I always wondered about that same question Dutch - never was smart enough to think to ask!
Please excuse my ignorance but what's a CKD?
