car jack
What type of jack do I need for my 460 SWB? Thanks.
It should have a hydraulic bottle jack under the bonnet on the left-hand side just in front of the battery.
If not, then a bottle jack with the right height range and lifting capacity should do. A trolley jack can give better stability but takes up more space if you want to carry it in the vehicle.
It is also a good idea to carry some form of load spreading device for use on softer ground. I use a sheet of galvanised steel about 15" square.
Hi Finn,
I suppose it really depends on how you intend using the jack.
If it is for just renewing the tyre for the spare in case of a puncture, then a decend bottle jack is adequeate.
It you indend doing more of your own work on the vehicle then a hydralic trolley jack would be the answer, but the size of the jack and its storage within the vehicle would always be an issue. In which case, you might want to buy each one. The bottle jack for you emergencies and the trolley jack for your manitance and serivce work.
For safetys' sake, you will need to consider a pair of axle standards to prop. up your vehicle. As you suggested, yes some sqaure wood pieces and thick metal square would be useful to stablise soft ground to prop. your bottle jack. Please add to your list some wheel chokes.
Cheers,
if you intend serious offroading you should also consider a high lift (sometimes called a farm) jack, these are quick and easy to use but have the same space limitations as a trolly jack only caution is where you jack from. And the need to protect the body work if jacking from the sides and the rear.
Thanks, the mechanics laughed when they seen the one I had bought.I told them I would check here to make sure I got the right one.
