airbags
I met up with an old friend on Tuesday and we ended up talking about airbags in older Mercedes vehicles. Apparantly the guarantee on these runs out at 10 years after which failure is to be expected in a signifcant proportion of accidents, this could be for cars as young as from 1999.
True,
Air bags and piroscopic (sorry for the spelling?) restraint seat belts charges have to be renewed every ten years. This is one of the reasons the older, expensive models have a poor second hand values, to start paying for these renewals could easily cost over £3000 in parts alone!
Consider some cars fitted drivers' and passenger car bags, the side impact bags, seat restraint charges, rear passenger bags etc, etc...
I do not know what the situation is with Insurance companies, will they use this as thier get out clause to renege paying out on insurance, claiming the vehicle is not properly serviced, as per manufacturers' standards. How many people have changed these systems?
Buyers beware....
Regards,
Sorry,
Do not know, but at my last place of M/b dealers, we used to have an explosion day to discharge these bags from warranty, occassionally inviting the local fire service to witness these discharges as first hand experience for them.
Boy, were the loud, particullary when they blew the dam thing inside the w/shop!
Cheers,

on a more positive note they did deploy correctly in an accident staged by 5th Gear where an old S class (20 years plus) was slammed into the rear of a Fiat but as with many things Mercedes newer is not always better.
