Swivel housings - how to check?
Hi,
I need to check if my swivels are lubricated correctly? any tips? ....they currently look like they are filthy and horrible but not dry!
Do I just remove filler/level plug and fill with grease?
Any general suggestions for ensuring trouble free 'wagoning'?
cheers Andy

Yes, just remove the filler plug and stick your finger in to 'sample' what's in there before adding new. If the grease has emulsified that could indicate new swipe seals needed, thin oily substance could mean some diff oil getting past the axle seals.
Originally the CVs were filled with (I think) a dark grey grease and the hubs with a white? grease - the idea being that grey grease would indicate a torn CV boot.
A word of caution, as suggested by above contributor, putting your finger in the swivel to test for grease; make sure no one will be playiing around with the steering wheel i.e. kids etc; and for that matter do not turn the steering wheel or hubs at point with finger in the hole, you will not have left on you.
Your are better off by just feeding your grease hose in the hole and start pumping in grease till the hole is filled. It takes in approximate 200 strokes to fill the half chamber from totally empty.
Take care, take heed,
