Re: Wont start - Help

Hi The Bosch Jetronic CIS mechanical fuel injection system has a cold start regulator which is prone to giving trouble..is there lots of black smoke during the cold start rough idle? and what rpm does the engine idle at when hot? the integrity of the vacuum system must be 100%.... check all the vacuum pipes for cracks.... if you click onto to" Bosch Jetronic fuel systems" in your search engine you will have all explained.with trouble shooting data ....... jump starting a flat battery on a petrol engine requires that you hold the revs at 1200rpm for 10 minutes then drive it around for half an hour to put a charge back into the battery. high speed / long distance towing an automatic can result in gearbox damage.......

Fixwix Thanks for the speedy reply, fortunately I only had to tow about 500 hundred yards, Sorry the other thing I forgot to say was that I put a brand new battery on as well. Where is the cold start regulator and is it easy to replace ?

Thanks again

Nick

Hello nickchalkley, :D

May seem a dumb question, have you filled with the correct fuel? Given it did not start after your fill up.

Although you have, had a new "dizzy-whizzy" some 1,000 mls ago, the fact the vechicle has be stationary for a few weeks, can mean moisture build up, check the dizzy - it won't do any harm. :P

You mentioned, that you tried to jump-start your vehicle, unless you used spike-protected jump leads, occassional this blows a 10 amp fuse housed in the over-voltage relay. The relay is of aliminium construction, tall standing rectangular, with a flip lid in red, this houses the fuse.

The relay its self is housed near or around the fuel relay. Check that out.

Good Luck & Regards,

Thanks Rakesh,

Think it sounds like a good idea to check cap and I will go through the fuse route as well, yes filled with petrol as usual, it is just wierd that it has spark at the plug and a smell of petrol but doesnt fire, oh well another evening to spend in the cold !!
thanks again

Re: Wont start - Help

Just had an after thought, whilst the spark plugs are out check the s/plugs heat range is correct and that you are not using resistor type plugs. M/bees do not like them, no, no..

If these were as wet as you mentioned , it would be a good idea to dis connect the fuel relay, remove all plugs, disconnect the cold start injector feed wire so to disconnect it from injecting fuel and crank the engine several times to dry it of collected fuel. Leave the plug holes uncovered for an hour or so, to let drying to take place.

Just before you are ready to retry starting, heat the sparkplugs tips with a hair dryer or heat gun collectively, fit and try starting after reconnecting the fuel relay only. Should it manage to start, let it warm up some what before switching her off to reconnect the cold start injector. Do not reconnect whilst the engine is running, there is a risk of ECU damage.

Cheers,
