Like most car enthusiasts, I like the smell of petrol. However, this is a bit much.

There is a serious stench coming from somewhere when the guage reads anything over about 3/4 full. I understand from Fixwins VIN check that my G was fitted with auxillary tanks from new. Might it be something to do with the way these are connected to the main tank? It seemed to be better with the windows shut although we only discovered this after some distance so it might have been coincidental to the fuel being used up.

I haven't had a chance to have a good look around it yet so it might be obvious. I don't think it's a leak though as MPG appeared OK (although I'm guessing at the M part as clock doesn't work!)

Any thoughts much appreciated.

Re: Petrol smell

theres a pipe that comes up from bulk head to meter head that is rubber , that's some times leaks where jubilee clip clips it on to the metal pipe coming up as pipe splits, also if tank is rotting it will seep through seam

Re: Petrol smell

the fuel tank rots on the top where the fibre cladding is in contact with it, the cladding soaks up water and corrodes the steel, answer is remove tank and cladding and repair it.

Re: Petrol smell

I think if it was the tank rotting it would smell all the time (wouldn't it?) as the cladding would have become soaked with fuel.

Also, is the guage linked to all the tanks or just the main one?

Re: Petrol smell

I had similar problem that turned out to be a leak from the pipe that joins the auxiliary tank to the main tank. Obviously only leaked while there was fuel in the aux tank. Doesn't take a big leak to make a smell of petrol cos the petrol was running down from the pipe onto the matting on top of the main tank and soaking it.

Re: Petrol smell

If it's the connecting pipe between the two tanks it's about £60 from your dealer, it's a special size reducer ie one end is smaller than the other, hence why it costs so much :(

Re: Petrol smell

Hi Tom the aux tanks start to fill after the main tank is 9/10ths full and the guage reads the contents of all three tanks from one sender.previous replies to your post have covered most of the causes for the petrol smell. if there is no obvious drip on the ground and it only occurs when the tank is full it will not be perished hoses on the delivery side of the pump...it could be the small breather / venting hoses at the top of the tank or perforated main or aux tanks.the aux tanks interconnector hoses in the rear wheel arches will show black marks on the rubber if they are leaking.......there are companies that can coat perforated tanks but how good or long lasting the process is I have no idea......aux tanks can be permanently removed......
