Hello everyone,

while my boss is enjoying his holiday, I was ordered to enjoy his nov. 2002 G 400CDI .

Since it had some small problems with it's aftermarket Xenon lights, I had to visit the garage which mounted the lights.

Before my boss left, he told me that when he opened the driver door the car started beeping and gave a failure on the display. He requested to also visit the dealer to find out why this failure occured.

On my way the first garage to fix the xenon, the failure occured when entering the car: TC in neutral. After arriving at the first garage and after reading the manuel which suggested the car was in 2WD mode, I tried to switch from and to high and low.

On the display above the place where the display shows in which gear it is in, there is no L or H indication.

After trying this, and nothing happened, I was planning on going to the dealer, but now the car did not want to drive anymore.
I can switch from P to any gear I want, but nothing, the car is not moving.
When you put the car back in P, you shortly hear a rattle, which stops after 2 seconds.

The car was towed to the MB dealer, near me, and tomorrow they will look at the car. The dealer was very honest, and told me he did not work much in the G klasse, cars.

This lead me to the internet, where it is written on an owners site, that because the display does not indicate H or L, the ecu of the TC does not know the position of the axe. This can be solved by pressing the Low button for 10 seconds and then the High button for 10 seconds, this should reset the position sensor (?).

Does anyone here know this method, and would it be usefull to call the dealer tomorrow morning to ask them to try this?
I do not want to offend them but they were honest about their experience with G klasse cars..

If the English above is not correct in any way, I am sorry, I am not from arround, but from Holland.

Thanks for any replies added!

Re: problem with TC

The G400 only has 4 wheel drive so it can only be a problem with the selection of high and low and mine has had that problem due to faulty electrics.

When you move the gear selector through the gears the gearbox will be spinning so the rattle you could hear when you put it back in park is the gearbox slowing down and the park claws inside the box trying to stop the shafts.

If the G has not been used in low range for a while the motor or servo which selects it can become seized and may just want freeing up.
