Steering column???
Having felt some knocking from the steering when off-road (nothing on-road) I started to read various articles about lubricating the slip joints on steering column etc etc.
Having just been out to see if I had any movement in UJ's and if there were any grease nipples to lubricate I noticed that my steering column looks like it has moved - should the top look like this?
Any help / appreciated
regards Andy
Yes, that's fine.
Regards,
I just removed mine on my 463, the bottom of your shaft, where it meets the steering box, looks like it should have more contact. The shaft is telescopic, I think, so you should be able to slacken the pinch bolts I think you might even need to remove and gently tap it down a bit further.
Also your UJ's look a bit dry? Try a very liberal coating of WD40etc then soaking on a Diesel rag. Should prevent problems!
To get the bottom joint, at the steering box, you need to remove the bolt completely as it locates in the groove in the spigot.
steering damper does not normally knock unless the end bushes are worn and then you would get steering shimmy at around 60mph....the fact that you appear to have cured the knock albeit short term! is baffling....any play in the steering box could generate a sensation in the steering wheel over rough/uneven terrain.is there excessive movement of the steering wheel before the wheels start to turn ??(engine running)......
I think that movement ok. Think up to 30mm in the mot testers book?
Have you checked any track rod ends whilst some one else steers?

Yes, you are correct. The permitted play at the steering wheel is 30 mm.
