Not a good day!

Just noticed a 2 inch crack from bottom left of window, slowly creeping up...this is now an addition to the 2-3 cm sized chips elsewhere....
any idea what is costs to replace the windshield? or could the likes of autoglass repair do that?

thanks!

Ferdi

Re: Front Window Crack

Most insurance companies provide a replacement windscreen as part of the deal.

Autoglass are on the case and have said its a full replace...but they are really struggling to find G glass! £70 on the insurance but no impact to claims...

Re: Front Window Crack

I needed a new side window over xmas as someone decided to break mine. Mercedes wanted nearly £500 so I used my insurance - also autoglass. they tried to fob me off with a cheap non merc window on the argument that the genuine article was back ordered. I told them to forget that and get me a proper one, took only a few days once they actually ordered it from MB.

Cheers Mike

Re: Front Window Crack

Just had my windscreen done on the G....same issue, crack propagated along the entire screen! Didn't know there was a difference from OEM and non-original. All I know is that my replacement doesn't have the black dotted area around the mirror.......in other words a non-genuine for sure. Wish I had known! Just make sure that they seal it up properly with the windscreen mastic stuff: they usually don't do this to see if they can get away with it! Mine leaked and they had to come back to replace the screen again. Not terribly impressed with the service.........

Also cost me £70 on the insurance.

Re: Front Window Crack

I am having a new green tinted screen fitted tomorrow following a 4 inch crack directly in front of the wheel, quoted £110 without insuance but by claiming on my policy because there is an excess of £60 it will cost me £50

which I think is ok, Paul

An interesting comment made by autoglass which makes me suspicious- they say it is MB but only diff is that it doesnt have the MB logo on it...but is supplied by MB...why would there be a difference?...is this them just trying to flog something else?

Rubbish! If it is the genuine article it should have the three-pointed star printed on it!

Re: Front Window Crack

I had mine replaced a few months ago via the insurance co. £25 excess. It wasn't genuine MB glass but still tinted. It just picked up another stone chip last week so it'll be needing another prior to the next MOT.
Mine had a heated windscreen fitted originally. but they cost £500+ and the insurance wouldn't pay as the previous owner had replaced it with a non heated one.

I wouldn't settle for a non OEM windscreen. Nor would I settle for any glass in stock in the UK unless it comes from MB. Your G has special glass and no its not just the dotted pattern behind the mirror. Your G has low heat transmission glass - its the reason why sat nav's don't always work through the windscreen. You will see about three or four different part numbers for G windscreens....

An OEM replacement windshield is not expensive nor does it take long to get.

I ordered a new windscreen from MB at 4pm. There was only one windscreen left in stock and it was in Austria. By about 8h30 the next morning it was installed in my G. So if MB wants to get you a part quick they can!

I think the total cost including labour was less than £200. MikeMike39 - I would seriously question £500 unless that included labour, tinting and the aerial...

Also Ferdi - make sure you order a replacement gasket at the same time!

Part numbers are (or at least were last year)

Windshield MA460 671 05 10 £86.25
Seal MA463 671 02 20 £40.45

Damn you really know your s**t Max good on ya!

Would that be the same part numbers if my one ever decided to give up?

Only because I broke mine a short while back!

Unfortunately it's not the same part numbers as your windshield, nor the same price. Your windshield has a built in rain sensor and quite likely an aerial as well as heating element. The price is if I recall correctly is in the regiion of £350....

Max it's actually happen, And 'Autoglass'Don't know where to start at this point... They will try and get it repaired as it's only a five pence crack (happened yesterday on M25), if they can repair it hoooray.

If not then WS better come from MB.

Re: Front Window Crack

Hi whilst on the subject of front screen installation....poor preparation of the seal and interface paint surfaces prior to replacement will result in water leaking into the G' at the corners causing the "soggy mat" syndrome and no amount of sealant afterwards will remedy this problem..stand over the installer and point out that the road crud and rusty bulges under the seal will result in a water ingress problem....the screen tends to move under the blast of air pressure from large vehicles passing in the opposite direction... any distortion in the seating of the glass/seal will result in cracking....
