after having cleaned the exterior of the car after the Salisbury Plains trip, I've only just noticed that my engine is caked in mud.

I've thought about getting it steam cleaned because it's splashed all the way up to the underside of the bonnet and things like my alternator are almost completely covered.

Spoke to Merc on the phone and they reckon it would be best just to leave it as the mud wont do any harm and 'there are some sensitive parts in there' but surely it can't be too good to leave the (lower half) engine caked in mud...can it??

anyone have any advice/experience with this?

Mr. Sav,

No real reason not to steam clean, provided you blow away any excess water with a blow gun on the air line.

Re: clean engine

hi sav, using hi pressure water isnt a good idea....!

firstly get some cling film or foil and wrap up any sensitive parts you see, like electrical bits air intake etc...

go to halfords and get some autoglym engine cleaner. spray the engine with the cleaner and get various types of brushes from £1 shop or wilkonsons.. give the sprayed areas a good scrub and then with a normal hose with the head in shower mode hose down the engine.

run the engine till it starts to warm up and then switch off. this helps drying it quicker and better. wipe it down with suitable cloths and see what you have missed

repeat till you are happy.

btw my engine seems to run warmer than before the mud bath :( . i havent had time to clean my engine or flush the rad properly for various reasons, but hope to sort it out once i am in warmer climates.
