Access to Front Wing

Can anyone help please?
Second problem in a month in my right / offside front wing.
Factory electric aerial has died, and now reflector [inside the clear or orange indicator lens] has broken. So indicator is loose off the body.

Indicator first. I unscrewed the lens easily enough but the reflector, into which the bulb is filled has somehow degraded and the fixing down onto the top of the wing is broken. Managed to get a new reflector – but cannot unscrew the old broken one as the holding nuts [ I presume accessed from within or under the wing] are loose and turn with the screw. So presume I need to get up/in via the wheel arch?

Now the aerial. Factory fitted, about 5cm forward of the firewall, but dead. Maybe just the sender, but need to get in to have a look. As with the indicator, I don’t want to remove the nylon protectors inside the wheel arch only to discover it’s not just the two hour job I planned...........

So any suggestions please. How do I easily access the aerial and get to the base of the indicator? And an aside........... The electric aerial from Mercedes is £290! A manual one is £ 26 – so will be changing to manual if the current one is U/S. Otherwise, any suggestions on where I could get an aftermarket one? Thanks very much. Alastair.

To remove the plastic wheel arch liner is a 10min job. The screws are most likely rusted. 6 or so from memory. You don't even need to remove the wheel, but it does give more room.
Aeriels are available from many suppliers ebay etc. Any electric one will do if you dont mind electrical modification to the plug.

Thanks Roly. I've removed the nylon wheel arch liner before to get to the starter motor - and, as you say, very easy. But don't recall seeing aerial, etc, when I did this. So question is still if you know if I can get access to the aerial and base of the indicator lense by just removing the liners?? I certainly hope so. Thanks again. Alastair.

In a word, YES. On my 300GES you also get access to the vacuum reservoirs for the diff locks. I've changed the aerial from there, £11 halfords rubber ducky replacement, but can't recommend it, as it works by getting the ground connection from scratching the inside of the fender, which in the G is coated, meaning you either lose your paint protection, or your reception. Alternative of course is to hook up a separate ground/earth for the aerial (didn't try it so far as got other priorities to fix on the car, I can live without radio)!

Thanks both.
A 40p nut under the wing for the indicator and an almost identical electric aerial from a car radio shop for £20. All fitted and working.

Most welcome, glad to hear you are done with it. Initially I used to dread removing the wheel liner but now it's a 5min job in the sun or rain :)

I waxoyled my G earlier in the winter and was wondering what these things were when I removed the plastic sills for a spray under....are these the bulb-like reservoirs under the driver-side (on a RHD), with the brake-fluid fill cap above the steering column in the engine compartment? If so, is this where one checks for the fluid-levels of the hydraulic circuit which the diff locks operate off? (excuse my amateur antics: I'm new to Gs and - thankfully - have never had a problem with the difflocks so never really needed to find out, but am naturally curious.)

The diff lock reservoir is under the bonnet. It looks like a normal brake clutch reservoir

Re: Access to Front Wing

thanks. know the one you mean. so this reservoir holds the hydraulic fluid for the diffs locks? I have a 463, so I assume that the difflocks are still actuated by hydraulics as on the 460s, but switched via an electric solenoid. is that right?

The vacuum bulbs I spoke of are better detailed on hehlhans.de though the photos are from a LWB.
