Looks good, although you have obviously ruined the slick aerodynamics of the G with that front case on the rack!

On a more serious note, how do you find the induction roar with that factory snorkel? My only experience with it has been in the 270CDI Military test vehicle and with the window down I found the noise very disconcerting with it being just at ear height. Not really designed for RHD! I note that MB have a different snorkel now that goes to the roof line although I am not sure how much quieter that would be.

Hi

You're obviously well equiped :)

What engine swap are you doing? I have a 230GE myself and though it runs fine would be better with more torque at lower revs.

Hi John, can't say the roar from the snorkel is very noticeable really but the whole car is a bit noisier since I fitted the military gearbox (had to remove the centre silencer) so it probably masks it somewhat and I only have a 230 petrol engine so no turbo to pull in the air. It was a slight concern when I fitted it but I just thought I'd cut and extend if there was a problem. The next stage is to fit a 290 turbo (from a sprinter) so things may change then.
I find it to be in a good position as it's out of sight (the other side of the screen pillar) so no loss of vision.

Re. aerodynamics :- the top box is only there when needed - normally I have an old wind deflector .........

I'm going for a 290 turbo from a sprinter van - the best option I think - same bhp, double the torque and approaching 30mpg

Dentsmithy,

Nice work! Is that your 3rd G? (From memory you had a white one and a sandy coloured one). When will the Turbo be going in and how much will that boost your current BHP? (anyhoo, what ever you do you will not win!  )

Great work though!

Spider, you should know by now it's not the size of the engine but the quality of the ride that counts

Re 3 Gs :- this is my first one - had it 6 years now and despite the body rust I can't bear to abandon it. The one I beat you with last year (120bhp btw) was always meant to be for the engine transplant but I'm dithering at the moment.
Then there is the cute little soft top which turns all the heads and only 70 BHP  ( just teasing)

I must say I would agree with you! Every time we go off Roading/Green laning, with the leather seats, air con, Kids Playstation in the back, its like off roading in a mobile lounge!

Though not sure what the current ML would be like, having owned a few of the old shape ML's, I feel this one would struggle a bit! Rumours around that there maybe another Dent trip? Care to comment?

Funny, I was just looking for that blog the other night, all linked in to goole earth and flikr through gps - cheers

Wanderlust - well there is a plan (but it's not going very well) but need to get this b****** roof finished, earn some money and get said plan back on course - might take a few days
The car is just about ready to go (unless I start the engine swap) on a long trip, digital maps of just about everywhere on the computer

Looks like there is some black visqueen type stuff on there, so job done I’d say. Priorities and all that

Chris,
What battery have you got? A 6NT or whatever it is . 11" square thing.

How's the house coming on?

Yes, the battery is a 6TN but not the gel, it's sealed lead acid. To be honest if I were going on a big trip I would replace it with the big Oddyssey AGM that is the same size. Done some research and they seem to be the ones now though they do need a good charger and a smart regulator to make the most of them - basically you have to fool the alternator into overcharging otherwise it won't fill up.

Re house:- just going out to cut the last housing joint on the last purlin on the barn roof, then a few spars, insulation board, hand forged gutter brackets then over to the roofers to put the flags back on.

Are you going to come up again?

Re: Just for interest

Yes we were exceptionally lucky with the weather although I am sure Corinne would beg to differ....

Over the school holidays would be nice but my mum will be here and not sure if she would want to come... well you never know she might... at the very least it should be a long weekend.

Need to convince David to put on another BBQ - though this time we should all contribute money towards it.

Usually around £200 but I got lucky with one sold as spares or repair for under a hundred but it's been upgraded a bit.

Thanks for the complements Hus,
I think the odyssey battery range are very good, though dear. If you want to run ancillaries like fridges go for the 1700 model. If using winches think about 2 batteries as AGM batteries don't like being discharged quickly - better to use a big tractor battery.

I never slept so well camping as i did in my Autocamp. Not sure if they have a UK supplier at the moment though.

The Beduin range look just as good.

I suppose i could be talked into selling my Autocamp, it's been in my shed for over a year,
