Needed to replace my battery yesterday as I was having problems with it. It didnt seem to hold its charge very well and yesterday morning it struggled to start up. So before I got caught out I thought I had better get it changed.

Called MB Brooklands who told me I needed a 100 Amp battery. Called round various places who didnt seem to have a branded one in stock. Halfords who only do their own brand at £100 + £4.50 fitting (Didnt want to get my suit dirty!) were also out of stock. MB Slough had one in stock. £171 plus Fitting! Ended up paying about £243 to get it done! If I didnt need it so bad I would never have paid but I just didnt want to get caught out.

On a better note I went to Halfords today and bought a set of Bosch blades. £13.49 + £2.99 for fitting. I can finally see through the winscreen again!

So, like , why did you not purchase one fay them at MB Brooklands?
Cheapest place locally for a battery at the moment is the local MF dealer
£45.00 for a tractor battery
most other places £90.00 for the equivalent
Must be sommat to do with MF'S pricing policy

Massey Ferguson.

Mine was £49.95 (same as a Ford Transit) in local factors, 4 yr guarantee

even going for one from Euro car parts shouldn't have cost much more than £60, have to fit it yourself though!

Yes I like Varta
Except my last Varta, after 7 years loyal service
FAILED, mid May, mid morning after a 15 mile drive,
having started perefectly 1st thing,
I went down the road to meet the Bro in Sainsburys car park.
Not even a "click" totally dead.
But hey she started with a push and on we went.
i got a Tungstone in my three times a year started wee red "G"
Charge it very very occassionally
Starts her 100% even in our current extreme cold when I was checking the antifreeze, after sitting for about three months.
Wow
Cheers
M

Can’t really be bothered finding out why but sudden/no warning failure is a characteristic of newer technology batteries. Afflicts all no matter what quality/manufacturer

Yes Russ,
The local alternator / starter motor rebuilder advised me of this as well.
I had surmised it was due to Varta's "silver chloride" technology or other technical innovation unique to Varta.
So basically require to carry a set of Jump leads.
Oh , and a gun, in order to persuade someone to allow one to connect same to THEIR battery / vehicle.

Re: Extortionate new battery

We've seen a massive jump in battery prices over the last 8 weeks or so. Used to be able to supply (LR) for about £60-£70 but now most are around the £100 area. The world has gone mad! This months pricing for LR has seen a 20% price increase on a massive number of parts. Disco has cost me £600 in the last 10 days, G-wagen has cost nothing since I bought it apart from stuff I wanted to do to it.... oh hang on... one CV joint at £60.

Re: Extortionate new battery

It was for the 300. From Partco, just before Christmas. Pretty sure it was the same fittment as a Transit or maybe a VW T4. Looks quite small but capacity / cranking amps etc are correct for the G.
