with the start of the new year and the anniversary of my G ownership soon approaching, i wanted to sort out a few little niggly things that need doing and was hoping to get some direction with where/how to start. i put them all in one post - hope you don't mind (especially the more basic/novice questions)...

1.) Red and Green lights on the rearview mirror flash for ages after i unlock and lock the car. they eventually go off but were not always like that. any ideas? also, i don't have a green key.

2.) #2 setting on heater fan doesn't work. 1,3 and 4 work fine. is there a simple fix?

3.) handbrake housing feels quite loose when in the down (off) position but sturdy when lifted (on). where can i tighten it up or is it supposed to be like that?

4.) is there a way of finding out how many miles i have left before a service is due? my 300td has the earlier more basic digital dash display. is there a way to DIY reset it if one carries out a DIY service? - a friend of mine is a mechanic and has offered his services.

5.) looking under the wheel arches at the chassis, especially after spending hours cleaning mud off it from the Salisbury trip, i noticed some flaky surface rust here and there. I remember a guy at Mercedes in Colindale also pointing it out and suggesting getting a wire brush and some Hammerite onto the problem areas. is this a sound idea?

6.) Heated seats lights flash when i first put them on - seems to be mainly when the car is cold or when i've just turned the car on. is that normal, is it waiting for the car to heat up a bit?

thanks and apologies again if all this sounds a bit too basic, but i need to start somewhere!

1) Light behind R/V Mirror flash for approximately, less than 10 seconds, say 4 to 8 flashes. Please quantify flash ‘for ages’.
2) You may have a burn’t out rheostat. This is not simple to replace, particularly, when you have to remove the fan housing.
3) Should be sturdy – sorry – can not remember how these mount on, vaguely, there are a few screws that secure the housing which are located under the front cover of switches. Or even screws located at the rear part of the housing, you will have to lift up the carpet cover from the rear section to access the screws. There is one screw in particular, that is mounted directly under the half width of the rear section tray. This is screwed on forward facing and secures the front switch cover. There is not much room to convenient remove. You are better off using a quarter drive socket of about 7mm hex angle head with a flexi –1,” long extension, operated with quarter drive ratchet.
4) Double click quickly as with a mouse on your PC either the left push button or the right hand one you will notice the instrument display will read out the information you require. To re-set the service light, DO SO, ONLY AFTER your oil change, DO NOT re-set BEFORE the oil change. With your ignition on, using ‘R’ button hold this down for a few seconds and the new service mileage will re-set its self. If you do not have the ‘R’ button then you want to the same with the right push button.
5) Sound fine. But I think it would be cheaper to do the same cleaning and then applying some flexible underseal, thin down a small sample of underseal with used engine oil or paraffin to make easy to apply your underseal if it too hard to apply.

thanks Rakesh!
regarding the flashing lights on the rear view mirror - they flash for around 25secs.

Fan speed 2 doesn't work on my 500. By moving it halfway to position 3 I can sometimes get it going. The switch must have a dirty connection inside

Fan setting #2 .. mine was a dirty contact on the resistor pack that is located inside the fan housing on a 460. A 463 has an external resistor pack that seems to be located on the engine bulkhead in front on the pasenger on a RHD car.. up high..must look like an electrical box about 2x1"x1/2" as a guess from EPC. At the least you could troubleshoot from that connection.

460 ones corrode as they are in the air stream.. real nice.. then you need to rip the dash out nearly to get to them..

It hadn't occurred to me that there were resistors externally. I'll look for the box.
Thanks. Speed 2 is the most useful one.
