In relation to a 617 engine

When I removed the engine fan, I was expecting this to be bolted on, but I cannot see any obvious way of removing.

Does it come off all in one go with the pully?

I thought I could of removed the water pump without removing this, however there is an awkward 10mm bolt on the bottom of the water pump, which I just cannot get to.

Thanks

there are, surprisingly, knowing mercedes different versions of this, but on most i have played with, the back of the viscous unit bolts to the front of the water pump pulley with four bolts which have a 10mm head, i believe.
these can be unbolted and then bolted back together once you have removed the viscous unit complete. i know this coz thats what i did when i removed my engine driven fan to replace it with three thermostatically controlled electrics, with an override switch!!!!!!

Try to pry out that greenish lid at the centre of the viscous coupling; the should be a hex bolt behind it.

I know of no other way of holding the coupling to the water pump... the picture attached is from my OM603 but it should not be much different to yours:

Hi Mortinson

I've already done that, and all that is behind is a little "button"

I have pressed this in to see if it releases anything, but it does not appear to do anything.

There are no bolts or anyting to the rear, so I'm puzzled as to how to get this off.

You're probably missing one of these...

Hello bollotti,

I think in your case, there should be behind the viscous coupling and in between the water pump pulley a big hexangle head of either 32 mm or 36 mm; you will need the tool M2dxb has posted in thread above, in fact two of those!

I would suggest buying a Sykes-Picavant product, easily got from the likes of Machine Mart or a Motor Factors. These should be in the region of £12 - £18 each. The hexangle may look as a one piece unit but you will find that it is infact two pieces tightened against each other.

Note: the nut is a left hand thread, so you will infact tightening in normal terms to un do the nuts. I.E. turning the force on the spanner clockwise to undo. These can be very tight! You might want to slide on some extension tube to gain addtional torque.

Thanks for the replies.

On closer inspection there is a large "nut", although it only has two flat sides.

I cannot see that this is in two parts, so I will take your word on it.

When I could see no obvious way of removing this, I suspected that there would be a "special tool" involved.

I thought this was going to be an afternoons work, but hey ho!

Whilst we are on the subject of fans, has anyone fitted a Kenlowe fan to a 617, and did it make an difference in power output?

Whilst I have everything off it may be worth considering?
